In Life's name and for Life's sake, I assert that I will employ the Art which is its gift in Life's service alone, rejecting all other usages. I will guard growth and ease pain. I will fight to preserve what grows and lives well in its own way; and I will change no object or creature unless its growth and life, or that of the system of which it is part, are threatened. To these ends, in the practice of my Art, I will put aside fear for courage, and death for life, when it is right to do so -- till Universe's end.

The Young Wizards is a Young Adult fantasy series by Diane Duane. A ninth book (Wizard of Mars) was published in March 2009. The tenth book, Games Wizards Play, came out on February 2, 2016. She is also publishing Interim Errantry novellas. The first set of three is available both in ebook and print. The second set is in the middle of publication as ebooks. The offshoot Feline Wizards series has recently become available as eBooks including the third novel, The Big Meow which was previously briefly available on line to subscribers but never published in print.

Over the past few years, DD (as Diane Duane is affectionally known on Tumblr) updated the series to correct timeline issues, bring the technology up to 2009-2010, and altered the original ending of A Wizard Alone so Darryl remains autistic.[1] The New Millenium Editions (NMEs) are currently only available as ebooks through her personal ebook store. Games Wizards Play is explicitly set in the NME timeline.[2]

DD is sporadically writing Nita/Kit for the 30-day OTP challenge on Tumblr. Individual stories may or may not be canonical.

Diane Duane's Presence

The Young Wizards has a small but enduring fan following, bolstered and in some ways hindered (examples?), by Duane's active presence within the fandom. She often responds to people's Asks on her Tumblr about the Young Wizards universe.

Fandoms have different levels of involvement with the creators of their source texts. This involvement varies in intensity, takes on several forms, and has differing end results. For more, see TPTB's Involvement and Interference. (Do we need this paragraph?)

Fandom

The symbol for the fandom is the Wizard's Knot.

There is a small but strong presence in the Young Wizards tag on Tumblr. Less active sites are Young Wizards LJ, Dai_stiho prompt challenge comm, Myriad Words fic comm, and the YW discussion forums.

CrossingsCon is the first-ever YW convention. It was held June 24–26, 2016 at Courtyard Newark Downtown.[3]

Fanworks

Much of the fanfiction is gen and thematically and stylistically true to canon. Pairings tend to be those implied in canon - main characters Kit and Nita, with Nita's sister Dairine usually paired with Roshaun. Their mentors Tom and Carl are the main slash pairing. Due to privacy reasons, they are not a confirmed couple in canon,[4] although Duane is rumoured to have stated they are a couple at a book reading.

DD's policy on fanfic basically amounts to "write what you want as long as it doesn't involve underage sex; I will never look at it." (However, she has clarified that Adult-rated fic with the younger characters is fine as long as they are aged up.[5])

It is often requested for Yuletide. There is also an annual Christmas in July fic exchange. A significant amount of the fic in the fandom comes from these two exchanges.
