Wingless fic involves a character suddenly and unexpectedly losing their wings. This trope originated in Good Omens fandom, in response to the excess amount of wingfic in that fandom. It has since appeared in other fandoms with angels or winged characters.
The wingless fic trope can be quite dark. Wings can be lost as a punishment or during torture. Thus wingless fic can overlap with whump and hurt/comfort stories. In many works the character who has lost their wings is often supported and helped by friend or love interest.
Lucifer is a fandom with canon-compliant wingless fic. Lucifer amputated his own wings and some fanworks examine the trauma of that event and his recovery. In this way, some wingless fics can resemble works featuring amputation, as a character comes to terms with the trauma of losing a limb.
