Welcome Home is a Stargate Atlantis vid by Kanzeyori. It focuses on Elizabeth Weir and her connection to Atlantis and the Atlantis expedition. Since the song has no lyrics, the vid uses mirrored images, symbolism and the instrumental music (which does not start until Elizabeth arrives in Atlantis) to convey its message.
Summary: Her, city.
The vid won the Stargate Fan Awards 2006 in the category "Musicvideo: Best Character (Weir)". It was also reviewed by paraka on May 31, 2006 at the reel vidding community.
Recs and Reviews
- "This video is like dancing. I've never seen movement used so fluidly in any vid, ever. Again, everyone reading this has probably watched it ten times over, but if that's the case, watch it again."[1]
- "The Vid That Made Me Love a Character I Loathe. And That Is So Good That I Didn't Even Resent It. [...] I suspect that if I were a vidder, I'd be a beat whore. So my technical love with Welcome Home is how it appeals to my retarded inner beat whore. [...] So a vid like this one, where the musical punctuation matches the visual punctuation so perfectly, is not just a thing of beauty; it's an inherently more enjoyable and understandable vid. And, frankly, I need all the help I can get in the understanding department. There's a narrative in this vid, too - it tells a story about Elizabeth, about who she is in Atlantis and what she does. (I'm trying to avoid spoilers for people who haven't seen Season 1. But if you have, you'll recognize the story pretty much instantly.) For me, this vid shows the Elizabeth I always hope to see in the canon and never do; I love that Kanzeyori managed to carve the canon to expose the good Elizabeth lurking inside it. And if that sometimes makes me want to sulk and kick the SGA writers for screwing up so much, well, it's small price to pay, frankly. If you love Elizabeth, download this. And if you hate her, definitely download it."[2]
- "With this vid, I feel like Permetaform took the Elizabeth in my head and made her real. This is who Elizabeth is, who she *should* be, this is everything I love about her and her city and my show. It does so much more with the alternate reality of Before I Sleep, and what that means for Elizabeth, than the show did. And it's not just about her--it's also about John, Rodney, Ford, Teyla, the entire city and what it really means to go through a portal to another galaxy. Permetaform really works all the gorgeous shots of Atlantis we see in the show, and turns the city into a whole other character."[3]
- ""Welcome Home" besides having the kind of Irish music I'd drool over even in a crappy vid, is... well, not a crappy vid. It's wonderful. Breathtaking, really. With the exception of the msyterious (and confusing) first few seconds of video but no audio whatsoever, the vid sucks you in the moment the music starts and just carries on on the adventure of Atlantis all over again. I would actually consider this more a vid about the city, myself, as opposed to an Elizabeth vid, but she is the character that sort of ties the whole thing together, and I guess that's why the award mods thought letting the nominees pick their own categories this year would be a good idea."[4]
