Webtoon is a webcomic hosting site. Webtoons come from the words 'Web' and 'Cartoon', and a term commonly used in South Korea.
Webtoon hosts many popular comics, such as Tower of God, True Beauty, Remarried Empress and Lore Olympus. Artists can create their own work.
There is a body of fan-translated work present on Webtoon as well.
Readers can read all works for free, but they can choose to purchase coins that allow them to read ahead. Webtoon also hosts numerous events throughout the year that gives readers an opportunity to obtain free coins, though these coins are not permanent and expire after a certain period of time. Creators can choose to publish on either Canvas, Webtoon's self-publishing platform, or Originals, works licensed by Webtoon. Canvas gives creators full creative control over their work and posting schedule and once their works reach a certain level of popularity (1K+ subscribers and 40K+ US month views)[1], creators can apply for Webtoon's ad revenue program, which offers them financial and marketing support. Originals, on the other hand, are licensed content from Webtoon and, unlike Canvas creations, follow a publishing schedule (i.e. every Thursday, etc.). However, in return creators of Originals gain an editor, marketing support, and are paid directly by Webtoon [2].
Works found on WEBTOON, particularly those of Originals, tend to slant towards tropes popular in east asian media such as transmigration. Frequently the WEBTOONs are adaptations of another mediums story to an English Webtoon, usually light novels written in Korean (could also include other east-asian media?).
