We're Lost, It's Cold, and There Are Dragons Out There is a Merlin/Arthur story by misswinterhill. It was written for Glomp Fest for gilli_ann.

Summary: Modern AU with magic. Arthur is relatively sure that Bear Gryllis has never had to deal with anything like the world's most aggravating baby dragon when he was out surviving in the wilderness. Merlin thinks that Arthur has taken the whole "magic reveal" thing pretty damn well, which might have something to do with Merlin saving Arthur's life just now when the helicopter crashed. The dragon thinks they're both idiots.

Comments

"This fic is a wild adventure. Very rich plot and a great OC (in the form of a little dragon). It's a modern magical AU in this complex world where people use magic instead of electricity and Arthur and Merlin work for Uther (whose company encourages non-magical power). After a helicopter crash, Arthur and Merlin discover the dramatic lengths that Uther is willing to go to provide cheap/clean power to the world and reduce the dependence on those with magic."[1]

"And oh, oh, the dragons, the dragons being among the people of Albion! And Merlin coming into his power.... I could go on and on and ON. I grinned at the references to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, and found baby Draco possibly had to be a cousin of Temeraire?"[2]

"I really love magical modern AUs and this delivered in spades with a nice little nod to reincarnation too. Really fascinating plot and the idea of magic and electricity as seperate power sources was brilliant The dialogue was terrific, both Merlin and Arthur felt absolutely spot on"[3]

"This had everything I love in it, from BAMF Merlin and slightly vulnerable Arthur to some wonderful world-building and internal logic to adventure! and adorable baby animals! and complicated relationships being revealed in deceptively simple ways."[4]

I found this fic by accident, I don't know why it's not recced everywhere at every opportunity. It's absolutely lovely in terms of Arthur/Merlin, and in terms of the adventure, and has one of the cutest OC (baby dragon) I've ever met. See, the cute baby dragon thing? It's not that I dislike things like that precisely, but let's say I enjoy other things maybe a bit more. Yet here I was absolutely charmed from the get go. Maybe because the author didn't intentionally set out to make it a cute overdose but rather wrote it as it went? I don't know. All I know is this fic is gorgeous and an endless pleasure to read.[5]

This was fun. Really fun. I loved the world the author built. Merlin (who is Arthur’s PA) and Arthur (soon to be CEO) have to survive in the wilderness, and take care of a baby dragon, and oh, possibly also save all of the dragons that are held captive by evil humans who use their magic to make electricity. And Arthur might die at one point but not really, and Merlin is the last Dragonlord, of course. This read like an exciting adventure story, with romance, comedy and a whole lot of magic. Great read.[6]

Dragons! What more can I say? This is a fast-paced and fun modern AU, with Arthur and his magical PA Merlin stranded in the mountains after a helicopter crash of suspicious origin. They end up taking refuge in a cave, and taking care of a precocious baby dragon and foiling an evil plot being perpetrated by the very company they work for, Pendragon Power. There are some interesting magical politics in this universe, and Merlin and Arthur are simply darling in this story. I would've had liked a little more exploration of British society in this AU, but that's just because I think that the world that misswinterhill is really cool (Harry Potter is "a gritty, determined look at the challenges facing young magic users in today’s society." What is there *not* to love?) Draco the baby dragon is absolutely precious and I just wanted to eat her up with a spoon. If you like some "stranded in the wilderness" to go with your "adopt a precocious child/cute thing" with a heaping dose of DRAGONS and ADVENTURE[7]

I truly enjoyed this fic as if it had thrice it’s size – somehow, the author managed to not only flash a whole world completely, but also their relationship with each other and with people around. It is, also, very funny and the adventure is compelling. It is, really, a fic that has it all. Rating: A+[8]
