Hearing a song and associating it with a fandom, or a relationship between characters in a film, book, or television show, is a fannish activity.
A Starsky & Hutch fan in 1980 wrote: "Alot of people seem to associate certain songs with the men, their relationships, episodes, zine stories. I have always thought of 'Thank You for Being My Friend' as foremost. I know a lot of others that fit certain times in their lives, including the one mentioned in Australia, 'Sometimes When We Touch'. Can we make a list of songs that seem to fit the S&H world?" [1]
There was a column in the Professionals letterzine Cold Fish and Stale Chips called "I Want My MTV. A fan in 1989 wrote: "Carrying on with our theme of wishful thinking, this column could also be called "Songtapes I'd like to see, but don't have the Time, Equipment, Patience to do myself". Again, ideas are solicited from you for future columns. These can be as simple as a song title, or as complicated as a line by line description of which scenes you'd use for what." [2]
Sometimes fans would transcribe the lyrics of a song and why they reminded them of their fandom.
Some fans had the ability and resources to create fanworks that represented this interest. Vidding is one. Songtapes is another.
For some fans, this interest took on the form of Virtual Music Videos. These were visual fanworks that took the lyrics from songs and interspersed them with screenshots from the source material.

The Sentinel
From a Sentinel fan, Becky. These were all created between August 1999 and May 2000.
Becky wrote:
"For some time I have been wanting to do a 'virtual' music video -- since I lack the ability to do a real one -- and this song gets to be it. The first time I heard this song, I only heard the chorus and immediately I thought of Jim and Blair. 'Course I listen to most songs nowadays and try to figure out how I can twist it to fit the boys. <g> In any case, once I bought the soundtrack (at which point I hadn't even seen the movie yet), I read the words and knew I had to write something for it. However, since my muse isn't being any help beyond about three scenes, I decided to do this instead -- screen caps around the words, similar to a few Wnnepooh has on her page. <<Hi Wnne!>> Eventually, I'll probably get around to writing something and what I write will most likely definitely not match the pictures I have for this version, but such is life, as the saying goes."
