Utaite is a term for people who cover Vocaloid or J-Pop songs and post them on NicoNicoDouga and YouTube. It is related to Utattemita, a term which means "tried to sing," which is frequently used in the titles of their videos.[1]
By definition, utaites are people who initially rise to prominence online. However, many utaites amass large followings. Some popular utaites have given live concerts,[2] released CDs,[3] and sold merchandise [4]. A few utaites have ultimately used their platforms to launch professional singing careers [5][6]. Some utaite have also launched careers as VTubers.[7]
