I always consumed TV and books fannishly, in the sense that I liked to talk about them with other people and imagine the "further adventures" of the characters. I basically wasn't aware of fandom as an organized activity until discovering online fandom around 1990 or 1991. (Specifically, as I recall, alt.tv.twin-peaks.)

The first fandom I was actually involved with was Lois and Clark, through the LOISCLA mailing list and its associated IRC channel. Other L&C fans (aka FoLCs) led me to Babylon 5 and The X-Files fandoms, and from there I was pretty well doomed.

I mostly consume fanworks and comment on other people's LJs, though I've written a few stories (which can be found here). Mostly I write for Yuletide; I find deadlines bracing.
