Reactions and Reviews

1990

I especially liked the last half of this story. It was interesting to me that the Vulcan half of Spock was portrayed as a demon unleashed, to be calmed by his human half. The imagery was wonderful in the meld sequence — the removal of the implanted memory was vividly written. Also interesting was Spock's inability to bond with Kirk because of his betrothal to T'Pring and his easy erasure of the memory. The romantic touch at the end was sweet and left me with a warm feeling. [1]

I liked this story a lot. It was so well-written that I was easily absorbed by it and able to completely forget the real world until I was finished reading. There simply weren't any stumbling blocks. Even with the aspect of jealousy -- and things between Kirk and Spock being less than perfect -- this maintained a warm, innocent feeling throughout. I also appreciated that Kirk took the initiative in setting things right with Spock, rather than having some misunderstanding between them drag out for pages and pages. The tale behind the rose was a neat idea, and the ending was so sweet I just had to stop and go, "Ahhhh." [2]

Now this really had a story -- and a convincing and intriguing one. at that. Spinoffs from the series always rate special attention and I had never read an extension of the Helen Noel angle of "Dagger of the Kind". A very good idea was very competently presented. Especially touching was the inventive legend of the rose and its symbolism. [3]

1996

Poignant and solid about a first time encounter. [4]
