ULTRAKILL is a first-person shooter video game with visuals and movement reminiscent of games from the 1990s, like Quake and Doom. It is developed by Arsi "Hakita" Patala and published by New Blood Interactive.

It was released in early access on September 3, 2020, and has been getting updates since. It currently has seven out of nine layers as of December 2023.

Canon

You play as V1, a war machine designed to take the blood of its enemies as fuel. As humanity went extinct, you, alongside many other blood-fueled machines, go through the nine layers of Hell, which are based on Dante's Inferno, in order to get more fuel from the husks of humanity, the other machines who were also seeking for fuel, and the angels patrolling Hell.

Characters

V1: The player character, which absorbs blood when it makes contact on its plating. As it is a machine, it does not have a gender. According to Hakita, it is not the protagonist.

Gabriel: An archangel who was sent from heaven to be the Judge of Hell. He tries to stop the rampage of the machines, but was defeated by V1. Because of this, he gains a burning hatred against the machine. He is the boss of the Gluttony layer and the Heresy layer.

V2: V1's successor. It is the boss of the Limbo layer and the Greed layer. V1 get an arm from V2 once you defeat it.

Mirage: A character appearing in the secret level 2-S, who looks identical to V1 except she is wearing a school uniform. She is called Mirage because she isn’t real,[1] and in extension, not canon.

Ferryman: The miniboss of the Wrath layer, and appears as a regular enemy in future encounters. One of them idolizes Gabriel after he saved them from being washed off by the sudden rush of souls entering Hell.

Minos: The previous Judge of Hell before Gabriel killed him and took his title due to him turning the Lust layer into a paradise. You can fight his Prime Soul in the secret level P-1.

Sisyphus: A husk who lead a rebellion against Heaven, which ultimately failed. You can fight his Prime Soul in the secret level P-2.

KITR: A cat that can be found in the Developer Museum. When found, she follows the player, and can deal lots of damage to enemies. As she is a cat, it is common for other characters, commonly either V1, to adopt her.

Mysterious Druid Knight (& Owl): A hidden boss in the Greed layer based on the YouTuber MandaloreGaming. The name of the Mysterious Druid Knight is commonly shortened to MDK, and is uncommonly shipped with V1.

Fandom

Fanon

  • It is common to see V1 referred using it/its or they/them pronouns. V2 is also referred with it/its and they/them pronouns, although some fans also use he/him for it.
  • V1 is typically voiced by TTS SAM, popularized by Gianni Matragrano's meme videos.
  • Many fans view V1 and V2 as having personalities, even though there are little to no hints on what they are like, and may, in fact, have no personality at all.
    • V1 is typically portrayed as a mischievous and curious machine.
    • V2 is typically portrayed as the serious and arrogant one.
  • Gabriel is typically seen as transgender, as that is the headcanon held by one of the artists working on the game, Francis Xie.
  • A common nickname for the Malicious Face enemy is "Maurice." Later updates acknowledge the nickname, as the bonus you get for killing enemies using its falling corpse is called "+MAURICED."

Memes

The fandom is known for not taking the game that seriously, usually making memes about its story and gameplay, to the point where some parts of the ULTRAKILL Fandom wiki has some parts that are not written professionally.[2] It helps that the devs, particularly Hakita and voice actor Gianni Matragrano, joins in the fun, the latter making memes of the game by acting as the character he voices, Gabriel.

Shipping

As most characters are male or have no gender, het relationships are rare, with the only feminine character so far being Mirage and the mindflayer enemy. The most popular ship is Gabriel/V1, to the point where it’s a Juggernaut Ship, although other ships, like V1/V2, Mirage/V2, Gabriel/Minos, Minos/Sisyphus and Ferryman/Gabriel can be found.
