Two Roads No More is a Kirk/Spock story by M.E. Carter.

It was published in the print zine T'hy'la #34.

Summary

From the zine: "Kirk and Spock return to Vulcan to have their bond finalized by a Vulcan healer, however Spock’s parents respond in a most unexpected manner."

Excerpt

"“I suppose,” he ventured finally, “that it would cause a bit of a scandal if I were to kiss you right here.” “Not a scandal, perhaps. Not in the way you mean. But given that we are in my home precinct and that the career, if no longer the face, of the son of Sarek is well known here....” Kirk grimaced, feeling suddenly conspicuous in his Starfleet uniform. “ There's no point in tempting fate.” “Exactly. However, we should soon find ourselves in... a more suitable location.” Though the home of the Vulcan ambassador to the Federation struck Kirk as a poor improvement over a public street, he covered his renewed uneasiness with a smile. “I'll hold you to that,” he said lightly. “Lead the way.”"

Reactions and Reviews

Those of you who have been involved in this fandom for awhile will have no problems recognizing this author’s name. You also probably are well-aware that when you saw her name next to a story, you were in for a real treat. A treat that, for awhile at least, we all had to do without. For like so many original K/Srs, she suffered a burnout when it came to the fandom and I was concerned that like those others, that spark would never be lit again. Fortunately my fears proved groundless as she has thankfully taken up the pen (or rather the keyboard) once again and if this story is anything to judge by, that spark has once again turned into a flame. The same passion and spirit and love that was so prevalent in her earlier works is just as present here, and you’d never know that she had ever lost interest in bringing to life these two amazing characters in her own unique way.

As she states in her forward, this story is a continuation of an earlier work entitled “Certainties of Being”, which appeared in T’hy’la 16. I won’t go into details with regard to that work except to say that if you’ve never read it, you need to make it a priority to do so.... I will say, however, that at the end of that story, Kirk and Spock make a decision to reestablish their bond. But they cannot do so without the help of a Vulcan healer, so it’s off to Vulcan to prepare for the ceremony and more importantly, to inform Spock’s parents of exactly why they were there. Spock, not surprisingly, is rather anxious about informing his father, as he has had a lifetime of disappointing Sarek when it came to his decisions. But, to their great surprise, resistance to their bonding comes from an unexpected quarter, still, they are determined to carry out their plans and join together as one.

What I think is unique about this story is that there really isn’t a lot going on as far as a plot, rather, it’s mainly Kirk and Spock on Vulcan, spending time together and dealing with Spock’s family as they make preparations to bond. There’s no tangling with Klingons or Romulans or even Le-Matyas. One would think that with such lack of action, the story would be rather boring. Yet just the opposite is true, thanks to this author’s tremendous skill. She proves rather strongly the point that you don’t need phasers on stun or photon torpedoes or Gorns or even Vulcans in Pon Farr to make a story captivating and unforgettable. You just need talent, something this author has in abundance. [1]
