Twilight becoming an Alicorn and a princess at the end of season 3 (a reveal which was leaked some time before the episode was announced) was fairly divisive, becoming one of the most famous arguments within the fandom[1][2]: Some believed this development for her character came out of nowhere, that the episode where it happened felt rushed and did not explain well why this transformation took place, or that it too obvious that it only happened to sell new toys of Twilight as a princess.[3][4] However, many fans did like the episode and the new development, and a big number of fans who disliked it initially ended up either accepting it or even enjoying it too some seasons later, with the controversy being mostly forgotten years later.
Common Tropes & Fanon
The human version of Twilight from the Equestria Girls spin-off is usually called Sci-Twi by fans to differenciate her from the normal pony version of the character.
After her transformation into an alicorn, it became common to see fans speculate if she would outlive her friends, since the other alicorns in the show are said to have lived for centuries, possibly being immortal. This has lead into many fanworks about the subject, from Twilight accepting or mourning their deaths to her giving up her immortality to not outlive her friends.
Pairings
She is commonly shipped with other members of the Mane 6, mainly Rainbow Dash in the ship known as Twidash; Rarity, in the pairing known as Raritwi; and Pinkie Pie, in the pairing known as Twipie. In canon, she has ship tease with the character Flash Sentry in the Equestria Girls spin-off, with the ship being divisive with the fandom, but still having some fans. Both the normal pony Twilight and her human counterpart (Sci-Twi) are commonly shipped with Sunset Shimmer, in the ship SunsetSparkle.
She is also very often shipped with characters from other series, with her pairing with Mordecai from Regular Show, named MordeTwi, becoming a popular meme in the 2020s; other pairings include her with Peter Parker[5] and Dipper Pines.
