I like this story arc of Danny gets in trouble so Steve does some kind of batshit insane stunt to get Danny out of trouble so Danny yells at Steve. It is so good for me. This fic follows that arc pretty much exactly, with a good bit of hurt!Steve as well.There is quite a bit of lack of realism in this fic, such as Steve running off on his own to do things, but it’s pretty much on par with the show so I can’t be too annoyed by it. One thing I do enjoy is the increasingly disjointed and hazy POV from Steve as he succumbs to his injuries.
I also like that there is a small amount of angst in this but it is all fixed by Ohana. It’s so beautiful.[1]
OMG, gripping, thrilling beginning. Love the details of the raid, the geography and wildlife of the islets and of course, the stealth and precision as Steve went into full SEAL mode hunting down and eliminating the bad guys to rescue his team. I love seeing Steve's badass side, the full military mindset as he focuses on his objective, yet fights his to keep his emotions at bay. Wonderfully tense scene as Danny is set for execution and Steve stages the rescue. Wow! Good job of escalating the suspense by showing the patrols and the radio check ins. Nice job of highlighting that these were professional mercs; that these guys were now hunting Steve and Danny. Great voices, like Danny's reaction and his insistence of going with Steve yet knowing when to keep his mouth shut. Great story, so so happy that I can go to part 2 immediately![2]
holy wow, is all I have to say. this grabbed me by the throat and the heart and just shook me all around and squeezed me. and then put me to bed under a blankee all squished and happy afterward. I don't know how you did that.“Excuse me?” Danny wipes away the sweat at his brow. “Are you delirious? I was only kidding earlier about the--” --- “Yeah, I knew your twisted mind could appreciate the overkill.”
and made me laugh, too. I just *knew* Chin and Kono would get loose. I shouted for joy when they came charging in. But when Kono had Steve's back? And he *knew* it? And that Chin and Danny would take care of things? I got all wibbly. I wibbled all *OVER* the place.
I loved the flashback scene and the bit on the beach, and such tactile imagery here:
The noise of chopper blades morph into shouts of orders, desperate voices dulling into soothing ones. Then everything descends into a placid calm, like the silence beneath the ocean.
and the ending was just perfect, really.

Oh. My. God! That's a masterpiece!I was squeeing from the second I read your summary. There are so many awesome things in this story - I'm sure I'm not be able to list everything but I'll try:
Steve in SEAL mode. Awesome, awesome, awesome!
The Steve POV! I love to read about his thoughts, his decisions, how he calculates how far away the camp is, where the sniper is hidden and so on. His thoughts about his transition from SEAL to civilian and that he maybe has to change a bit. That he is allowed to think about things and not shove it in a corner of his head. I love that he falls into old habits (the hand signs) and has to think: No, I have to use other signs - which breaks my heart on one hand because he lost his old team but on the other hand: He found a new one!
I love, love, love that Chin and Kono managed to rescue themselves! And Kono protecting Steve? ♥
Mount St. Williams? One of the awesomest names I've read being given to Danny. I love that he understands that Steve has to do this and has to do it the SEAL way (the throat cut scene). I love that he carries Steve and does the first aid and comforts him on the beach. I also love that, even though it's a Steve POV, we know what Danny is thinking and that it pains Danny to cause Steve even more pain when he puts the field dressing on Steve's wound.
The H/C? You are the master of it! The beginning with the explosion and Steve waking up and being in self-defense mode? Awesome! And the gunshot wound? Great and realistic! I love that Steve tells Danny when he isn't able to go on - that scene with him crumbling and Danny taking his weight? Hits so many buttons. ♥
I love how you manage to balance the action and seriousness and H/C with humor. ♥
