Trekkie Talk was the newsletter of Austrek.

It had two issues before it was retitled Captain's Log.[1] "With SPOCK designated as the club’s fanzine, a new newsletter had to be created and the first was Trekkie Talk of which there were only two issues released in December 1976 and January 1977. From February 1977, Trekkie Talk was rebranded into The Captain’s Log where the issue numbering cycle was restarted at #1. The Captain's Log is still in production with over 300 issues having now been published." [2]

Issue 1

Trekkie Talk 1 was published in December 1976 and is a single page.

first issue, the initials stand for "Geoff Allshorn, Joan McLachlan and Russ Edwards"

The editor stated:

Welcome, fellow trekkies, to our first AUSTREK monthly newsletter! Up till now, we have had to use the Melbourne Amateur Science Club's monthly CLUB NEWS to give you our latest news, gossip, etc. But at last, we have managed to start production of our own monthly newsletter, completely independent of the CLUB NEWS. After much debating, Joan McLachlan and I have decided to label this newsletter... TREKKIE TALK.

We hope you like the name, and more importantly, we hope you like the articles.

  • Welcomes readers to Austrek's 1st monthly newsletter
  • announcement of 1977 meets, including Austrek's first public meeting
  • a 30-page zine called Spock is planned

POSTSCRIPT: The three people referenced: Geoff, Joan and Russ, were thanked nearly fifty years later in an interview with early Austrek Member, Paul Murphy.[3]

Issue 2

Trekkie Talk 2 was published in January 1977 and is also a single page. This was the final issue before the Austrek newsletter was retitled.

Trekkie Talk #2, January 1977

This issue included:

  • Austrek membership price increases from $1 to $2.50
  • an appeal for contributions for the next S.P.O.C.K.
  • an advert for a Star Trek Marathon on Australia Day weekend at the Ritz in North Melbourne
  • a hope that everyone had a happy (sorry Mr Spock) Xmas and New Year
  • a hello to Diane Marchant, a "thank you" for her Xmas card, and a get well wish (she was convalescing from what would become chronic back trouble)
