This bitter earth is the name given to a collection of fan art pieces by the artist Morphine Pudding, the collection has no given title by the artist, but is accompanied by song lyrics from This Bitter Earth by Dinah Washington and Max Richter. The pieces feature the characters of Daryl Dixon, Rick Grimes and Carol Peletier from The Walking Dead, each character appears in a state of sadness or grief and they are accompanied by shadows of their loved ones, Merle Dixon, Lori Grimes and Sophia Peletier.
The pieces combine digital full body portraits with animation, with the shadows appearing beside the portraits. The shadow of Merle is blood red, unlike the shadows of Lori and Sophia, this may signify two things, one, at the time of posting, Merle was the most recent death on the television series, with these pieces being shared shortly after the episode This Sorrowful Life, and two, Daryl had to put down his brother's zombified corpse. As of December 2018, the Tumblr post that showcased the collection has over 21,000 notes.
