Reactions and Reviews

1988

THESE THINGS WOULD I DO by Emily Adams is an odd situation with a satisfactory, if somewhat cliche, resolution. After sustaining Injuries on a landing party. Kirk and Spock discuss those things they'd always wanted to do but had never gotten around to doing. Predictably, Spock wants to experience sexual intimacy... and Kirk obliges after some predictable machinations. [1]

This story is one I like, and though familiar, it wasn't tiring or boring at all. Spock's reticence and discomfort was well depicted. Both of Dragon's illos were excellent. Especially intriguing was the alien landscape with its upside-down civilization. And last but not least, I love it when they discover each other! Made me feel good all over. [2]

1989

This whole story is one of the most believable, well-done first-timers ever. Everyone was in character and there was just the right touch of humor, sex, emotions, etc. Coming so close to death does make one think of all the things not yet done and almost missed out on. I loved the way Kirk and Spock discussed the subject as close friends do, revealing their thoughts and desires and being so open with each other. I really enjoyed the way things went on their leave; after all, they know each other so well that I felt they were subconsciously setting everything up just to get to exactly where they ended up - together. Kirk was unusually crude in his plans to take Spock to a prostitute because he knew Spock wouldn't go through with it! Altogether an excellent story. [3]

1998

This is one of those stories that I periodically reread, when I need the warm glow of a soft loving, romantic K/S story. Both Kirk and Spock have been injured during an explosion on a mission, and they are back on the Enterprise on restricted duty, recovering. They help one another during this time with their company, with Spock massaging Kirk's cramping legs, and Kirk returning the favor on Spock's aching back.

During one of their late night conversations, Kirk asks "...when you've been as close to death as we have, do you ever have thoughts of things you wish you'd done or places you wish you'd seen..." They talk about crystal mountains, and sailboats, and playing the flute (guess who says what!), and finally, "in this warm intimacy of nighttime confidences," Spock says that he wishes he could have experienced sexual intercourse.

Kirk takes him seriously, and when they are sent by McCoy on a month of sick leave, he leads Spock to a brothel which the Vulcan simply cannot enter They go back to their suite at the hotel, Kirk apologizing and saying he shouldn't have pushed, Spock saying "I am also utterly incapable of entering into a physical unk>n with a...stranger"

There's a lovely, intimate interlude as they talk and get ready for bed, until finally Kirk asks the inevitable question. "Spock...would it disturb you to be made love to by...a man?"

It's great that the author doesn't make either one of them rush into the act. Spock considers it in his own Spockian way, and Kirk lets him. There's a very satisfying feeling of intimacy to this story, along with a measured pace with the author very much in control. And a mature ending that matches the story in every way, and brings it to a nicely rounded thematic conclusion.

Sweet short, sentimental, no plot, but what else could I ask for? Emily Adams at her romantic best. [4]

2003

A walk on the mild side of K/S A leisurely stroll from friendship to experimental lovemaking. Very low-key, too low-key for me. All the right words were there but none of the intensity I expected. Still, a sweet entry in Emily's oeuvre. [5]
