Author's notes: "I suppose I should explain this little piece of fanfic. Or, to be more accurate, fan-fanfic. I read this story, "The Way Way Back" by Liz Estrada and it stuck with me to the point where Faith started talking. And wouldn't shut up. So after about a year of intermittent writer's block as well as loosing disks, files and even one whole computer, here's the story. I tried to make it stand alone but you probably should read the original first though so that this makes more sense. It can be found at Pink Rabbit (http://www.altfic.com) or at Forgotten Hearts (http://www.geocities.com/faithandkate). Plus, you should read "The Way Way Back" because it's a damn fine story."[2]
Recs and Reviews
Ivanova said about it:
- The Way, Way Back by Liz Estrada is one of the first fanfics I read, and still one of the best. It is neither new, nor am I the first person to recommend it. A long story, with tons of dialogue. And the fantasy plot (time travel, yay!) would make Joss Whedon green with envy.
- Detective Kate Lockley has messed up a case, so she takes Faith out of jail to help her travel back in time and set things straight. This story actually makes you believe the two women are falling in love with each other in a couple of days.
- In the end, however, Faith faces a classic choice: her own happiness versus Kate's (and "doing the right thing"). No chance for your average happy ending, but this one will break your heart.
- Thank Goddess, Maven [...] wrote a sequel: Schrodinger's Angel. Not an easy task, but she manages to capture the tone and atmosphere of Estrada's story when she sends our heroines (plus...whatshername...oh, right, Buffy) on a second time trip, and makes Faith lose her love again...or doesn't she?[3]
Other recs:
The Way, Way Back by Liz Estrada, and the sequel, Schrodinger's Angel by Maven (Faith/Kate Lockley): the phenonmenal time-travel stories of doing the right thing, twice, no matter what the cost.[4]
A beautiful story that hits every note: incredible plot and story worthy of Joss & Co, perfect Faith characterization, great dialog, and a believable, bittersweet ending. I've recced it before and I'll probably rec it again, because it's just that damn good.[5]
In my opinion, this is the best characterization of Faith, bar none. Told from her point of view, the story pairs her with Kate Lockley, who, unfortunately, didn't get beyond season 2 on Angel (to my recollection, anyway). And though I never really thought of them as having potential, this fiction made me a believer. It is totally original, chock full of angst (Faith is the queen, after all), with plenty of humor, action, and cameo appearances thrown in for good measure. A great read.[6]
