Reactions and Reviews

THE VULCAN FOUNDLING is also a story by an author whose name I don't recognize. But it doesn't matter, as this story stands on its own. It is an alternate universe situation, wherein Spock Is raised on Delta due to the untimely death of his parents. With Deltan attitudes and his Vulcan "good looks', he makes quite a sight when he and Kirk meet for the first time at a diplomatic meeting on Delta. The writing In this story is slightly choppy in parts, yet the plot is sufficient to see the reader through any "bumps'. A very memorable story, with likeable "secondary characters in addition to Kirk, Spock and McCoy. [1]

This was a colorful A/U story about Spock growing up as a Deltan. Unfortunately, a lot of it was very "told." This might have worked for this kind of story; it could have had a "fairy-tale" narrative feel to it But it didn't quite come out that way.

A Vulcan shuttle crashed on Delta (not a part of the A/U version of the Federation at this time) and all died except Spock, who was raised by Gethsethia [what a difficult name to pronounce].

The picture painted of Deltan society and the characters in Spock's life was very vivid. And we are seeing a Spock with all his Vulcan abilities, but fully living his emotional life, and in a very sensuous way, too. Before Amanda died. Gethsethia gleaned from her mind the basics of Vulcan ways; and so she had an interesting time trying to raise Spock aware of the ways of both cultures.

Then we see Spock at 13, in their idyllic life, and he's very sensitive, very Deltan. and loved by all. and his Vulcan beauty is appreciated by all There is a beautiful youth-love scene, Spock with his two best friends, one male, one female. His artist boyfriend likes him to lie nude in the meadow and put flowers all over him.

And there comes a time years later when Spock has a chance to leave, to be with other Vulcans and humans. In his young adulthood, Spock is now a healer (including surrogate sex) and musician.

I think making this boyfriend overly possessive was supposed to inject some kind of conflict into Spock's growing up and his actions at the time he goes aboard the ship where Captain Kirk is. but it didn't seem all that important.

We are told in one paragraph that Kirk and Spock. on their first meeting, talked about everything; told they're very comfortable with each other, told how each feels, told Spock is attracted to Kirk and that Kirk is drawn to the expressive, sensuous Vulcan, which Spock can sense. So now Spock is a part of the crew of the Explorer, as a healer. There's this big bearlike "guy" Mok. An imaginative character, hermaphrodite I guess it is, where he is male at some phases of his life, female at others, and there is a whole thing where Mok thinks Spock is his life-mate because of some mental congress they engaged in. Again, I believe this was done in order to put something in the way of Kirk and Spock coming together, which in this case worked a little better, because everyone on the ship is so taken with Spock that Kirk can hardly get close to him, but is obsessing over wanting him, and very frustrated.

But finally they do get together, and it's a lovely nude at the pool scene, and some nice words of touching and kissing, but then we're told they make love. Told, told, told, how each feels, and now they are mates, t'hy'la, and all is perfection together. After showing all of Spock's life since an infant, once Kirk and Spock get together, it was wrapped up so suddenly. [2]
