Reactions and Reviews
Loved this because of...everything about it. A nice Janice Rand slant to it, how embarrassed she felt after her words to Kirk down on Miri's planet about looking at her legs. I liked how the other episodes were brought in by Rand's thoughts, not dwelt on too long but great. And when Rand transfers off the ship, without bitterness, Kirk is kind to her. Actually, both he and Spock are gracious and generous to her. There were interesting insights into a yeoman's duties, in particular one comment about Rand's social life shipboard. This is a good idea, a great setting up of the theme of the story, the ultimate gift—of course it's love. There's an effective focus on an episode (Galileo 7) that isn't explored too often. I'm so glad, also, that Spock responded instantly to Kirk's offer of love. No hesitation or doubt. Just swell! Titillating love scenes and great ending. Left me satisfied no end. Very nice! A unique slant and a simple warm telling. [1]
Well, this zine certainly had no shortage of stories that were a bit different than the norm. “The Ultimate Gift” is a story initially told from Janice Rand’s point of view, which is rare in K/S. I don't normally like Rand much, but the author managed to make her both likable and interesting in this story. It starts immediately after the episode “Miri”, and Janice is reflecting on her behavior on the planet. We see in this story that she is in love with Kirk, and still has hopes that Kirk might come to return her affections. As the story progresses through various missions, Janice observes Kirk, and his closeness to Spock, and she comes to realize Kirk cares for Spock and belongs with him. I always like it when Kirk’s and Spock’s interactions with each other are described by a third party; when they notice all those K/S moments we see in the episodes, too! Janice decides to transfer off the Enterprise to try and move on with her life. There’s a very nice goodbye scene with first Spock, and then Kirk, and she has some parting words for Kirk. Her words are the catalyst that helps Kirk to realize how he feels about Spock, and to act on it. It was nice to read something a little different, and I enjoyed this story. [2]
I have to say, I was really impressed with this story. Janice Rand was never one of my favorite characters from TOS (I put her in the same classification as Chapel), but I really enjoyed the way the author portrayed Rand in this story. She came off not as a a "dumb blonde", but as someone I could really feel sympathy for. The author did an excellent job of making the character's pain very real for me and I felt true sympathy for her at the end. This is well-worth a read. [3]
"The Ultimate Gift" was six pages. This short story specifically refers to three different events from the TV series, and I think this makes the story appear a little disjointed. Using Janice Rand as a character, though, is fairly refreshing. Perhaps if the story had been longer it might have appealed to me more.[4]
