Originally Published in Another Zine

It was originally published as a novella in Other Times and Places 4. Jane wrote:

This novel first appeared in an issue of Other Times and Places, but since those zines have been out of print for years, we decided to salvage this item and publish it under its own cover, just as TIME AND MOTION was lifted out of the old Beguiled issue...

In this historical fantasy, Doyle is a swordsman on the road looking for a fortune in the riverland, Bodie is a ducal heir, veteran of the war-torn frontier campaigns and in terrible danger. 'The Swordsman' is hired as his bodyguard, and a mystery unfolds that spans generations and opens the gatweay to a "magic" that could unravel future history...

This novel is 110pp, DTP layout, photocopy, coil bound. [1]

Original Fiction Announcement: 1999

This story's serial numbers were filed off and was published as original fiction by Mel Keegan, who called it both a straight, mainstream version of this story" and a "sequel." [2]

THE SWORDMASTER: Sequel to THE SWORDSMAN by Jane

Ummmm, folks, Welllll ... interest has been shown at a professional-publisher level in a straight, mainstream version of this story, and it must be retired as a zine before it can be properly developed as a major novel. There is still no definite news about this yet, but we want to like to keep the pro door open for a while longer before committing to a zine!

So, though it's still just December as I write this, I can tell you without fear of contradiction, THE SWORDMASTER isn't going to happen in the next few months, or even a year or two. But if we draw a complete blank with the pro-version, it's do-able as a zine if there is still sufficient interest in a new b/d title.

Speaking of which, b/d titles seem to be winding down. The fandom is in a lull, alas, and publishing new zines is a bit exasperating. [3]

Summary of Original Fiction Version

From Amazon:

Jack Leigh is a soldier of fortune, a brilliant sword-for-hire. In the dangerous Riverlands dukedom of Rhondia he gets much more than he bargained for. Treachery and dark magic form powerful undercurrents in the citadel. On the canals and in the menacing heart of Nimmenwald lurk unimaginable threats - the bo'zhe, the Lappai, barbarians from Saihabara and the unknowable forces of Nimmenwald Deep. At the crux of a vortex of magic and treason is Rhondia's heir, Michael Sebastian - Seb - d'Astaghir. Haughty, moody, haunted by the goblins of memory, Seb is in terrible jeopardy. It's only luck when his old friend, old lover, Luc Redmayne happens on a streetfight and a 'hired sword' enters the citadel as Seb's bodyguard. With the fresh eyes of an outlander and the shrewdness of a soldier from Yulminster, Jack uncovers the treasonous magic which is simmering beneath Rhondia. But when he and his companions finally lay hands on the Basilisk ring, they unleash the very forces they have feared.
