The Spark Inside was a Hanson fanfic challenge moderated by Brittney from 2006 to 2011. The last round was held in 2011 and in 2012, she moved the site to an archived version on PlaceToHide.net. Each round featured a different type of challenge.

For the Spring 2006 challenge, authors wrote a story for someone else based on a list of 3 things the recipient did and did not want included in a story and then names were drawn at random to decide which requests each author received.[1]

Like in the Spring 2006 challenge, authors in the Summer 2006 challenge wrote a story for someone else based on a list of 3 things the recipient did and did not want included in a story and then names were drawn at random to decide which requests each author received. This was also the only year when a second challenge session occurred.[2]

Summer 2007

Description from the website:

For the Summer 2007 session, two to three authors were give the same theme out of nine categories to create a story and show the different ways the same basic plot could play out. They were also given three other items to include in their story.

This was also The Spark Inside’s most successful challenge topping off with the most participants ever, which was 20 people.[3]

Spring of 2008 the theme was “Worth A Thousand Words” with a picture to base the story on plus one quote and one item to include.[4]

Summer 2009

Description from the website:

In the summer of 2009, we tried collaborations. Authors were paired up with another writer they had not worked with before. They were given a list of challenges to choose from in order to create a story. This seemed to be the least successful challenge.[5]

Spring 2010

Working around the theme “How Far We’ve Come,” authors were challenged to take a look back at a story from their past and rewrite the beginning, showing readers how they would do things now.[6]

Authors were assigned several different kinds of prompts provided by other authors. The authors then took those prompts and used them to mold together a story that is between 5,000 and 35,000 words.[7]
