The Shelat is a Kirk/Spock story by Susan Douglass.
It was published in the print zine Within the Mirror #3.
Regarding the Title
The title is spelled "The Shelat" in the table of contents and on the title page, but this is an unfortunate typo.
In the story, it is spelled "the Sehlat," and it is the code name for a commander.
The word, of course, is Spock's childhood pet, a sehlat.
Summary
"M/U and A/U: Kirk is captured by the Empire and finds that his lover from the academy is now the Grand Inquisitor."
Reactions and Reviews
I thought this was one of the best stories in the zine. The feelings and emotions were so strong that I could almost feel them. I only have one question. If K & S had loved each other and bonded with each other during academy days, why did they separate for so long? I would love to read a sequel to it explaining how they got together in the first place, why they split up and what happens after the events in this story. [1]
I don't know if anyone noticed this, but "The Sehlat" isn't a Mirror story. It belongs to another a/u that is very close to the Mirror universe. The Mirror Universe is the one we saw in the episode 'Mirror, Mirror'; in that episode Spock was the First Officer aboard the I.S.S. Enterprise in 'The Sehlat:, Spock never served aboard the Enterprise. He and Kirk were lovers in the Academy, and never saw each other after they graduated. Their careers took entirely different paths. I am pointing this out so that readers will appreciate new original this story really is. [2]
