Reactions and Reviews
A well-thought out, well-structured story about Kirk and Spock having been "married" at ages 7 and 8, respectively. Spock's jealousies destroy the relationship and 19 years later, he comes to the Enterprise.I enjoyed the first-person memories of Kirk's. It was done well in Ms. Parrish's usual sparseness, but still retaining lots of feeling and effect. I especially liked the boyhood memories - they were thoughtful and precise.
Only one problem I had with this story was accepting the premise of Spock's strong and continuing jealousy. In order for it to work, it would have had to be fully explained, which it never was. The only mention was that Spock was jealous because he was insecure (of course, what else?) and only one mention after 19 years apart.
There was something interesting that I liked towards the end, when Spock and Kirk are making love- Spock is dominant yet Kirk penetrates him. But Spock still never loses his dominance- this was done very well. [1]
Quite a fascinating A/U tale. The story is told in flashbacks (Kirk's memories) back and forth, not in chronological order: I like it this way-Kirk is about to have a reunion with Spock after 20 years. They had been married 20 years before, had been bonded at ages seven and eight. Kirk's father had brought the family to Vulcan when Kirk was six; Starfleet's presence was needed due to wars on Vulcan.Kirk gets lost in the city, loses his mother, and along comes Spock, This is how they met. I enjoyed imagining them as young boys; Spock "old" beyond his tender years of course.
Then a flashback to when they were ten years old, and Spock's jealousy. They were divorced at 17, Kirk not being able to tolerate Spock's jealousy. I'm glad he dumped him instead of getting tangled up in it-jealousy is so...intolerable.
Twenty years later, Spock is an ambassador; Kirk still loves him. Delicious-very forceful Spock coming to Kirk, fucking him; their first time! Nice sex.
So Spock joins Kirk on the Enterprise, says the jealousy is over. But ! don't believe him. I think righteous jealousy, as in possessiveness (I mean, not pure feeling of jealousy itself, but when the person feels he is justified in his possessive demands over the other person) is so ugly, one of the worst things; Spock's taints my feelings about him, and I would never trust him if I was Kirk. [2]
This is another Imaginative Anna Parrish story, yet the plot needed to be thought through more thoroughly. The a/u concept of Kirk and Spock having been bonded as children is interesting, but the idea that a Kirk with a human male adolescent's revved up hormones would wait two years in total sexual frustration before he finally left Spock does strain my credulity. I also think that an adult Kirk who had such a low self-esteem that he stayed a sexually dysfunctional virgin for nearly 20 years wouldn't be capable of commanding a starship. There was also a moment of unintentional humor when Kirk tells the touch telepath Spock that he isn't "psychic". He really meant to say that Spock couldn't predict the future. The term for that particular psychic gift is precognition. [3]
