Excerpt
"The problem with you, Jim, is you keep looking for the perfect gift. There ain't no such thing." Kirk shrugged, refusing to acknowledge the truth of his CMO's statement. "It's just that Spock deserves the best." McCoy grinned, shaking his head. "Well, keep looking."

Lots to like in this story as Kirk wants to find the "perfect" Xmas present for you-know-who. Kirk's thoughts of Spock's emotional life are really nicely done. He thinks: "somebody that sensitive to others must feel very deeply/ It's a lovely scene as K gives S a sugar rose from a cake. Very inventive idea of a book of "the earliest translations of Surak's words into Standard." This is not only something S would love, but is supposed to be one of the "last real books published."
I put aside any reservations I have about there being Christmas aboard the Enterprise and enjoyed Kirk going in search of a gift for Spock. Another lovely scene as Spock mind melds with him. "To share Spock's mind! 'Yes/ he whispered, trying not to command, hoping that Spock would not see how very much he wanted this."
I can't quite buy that Kirk didn't "notice" that Spock had an erection when they melded before. And I didn't understand exactly why the realization suddenly dawned on him. But I did like what Kirk did about it.
Spock's response to McCoy's gift to Kirk is clever and funny.
My absolute favorite line: "I shall unwrap my present now." And he does.
Hey! "Spock's furry little balls"?? What is he, a bunny?
Perfect Deeb drawing accompanying the story.[2]

This fun story is about Kirk's search for the perfect Christmas gift for Spock. Shelley has already commented on the appropriateness of assuming Christmas is a holiday in the 22nd century, and I agree with her. (I wish Paramount had considered it's appropriateness in the 23rd century before making Generations.) Despite this and despite the light-hearted nature of this story, the author does deal with some important issues about the nature of gifts and when they become traps for the receiver. Besides, watching Spock unwrap his gift is a lot of fun.
I have one quibble. The scene setting in the flashbacks at the beginning of the story is not detailed enough. It is confusing when and where they are taking place. [3]

I've only read a few stories based on the idea of Kirk and Spock exchanging gifts that I like -- this one is definitely going on that list. That little icing rose -- what a perfect gesture and given for all the best reasons. They say that the very best things come in small packages. Did Spock know Kirk's heart was in that rose -- is that why he preserved it so carefully? [4]

I've always had a favorite Star Trek Christmas tale—one I found in a Genzine years ago and which I pull out and read each Season. I may have just found a new tradition! This has everything: poignancy that brings tear to your eyes, humor, and loving that makes you squirm with envy. One part breaks my heart and fills me with joy at the same time. Kirk is cleaning up after the Enterprise Christmas party (his gift to the crew) when he finds a leftover confectionary rose. Impulsively, he takes it to Spock as a Christmas gift, which the Vulcan gracefully accepts. The incident is forgotten until months later when Kirk spies the sugar rose enclosed in plastic sitting on Spock's desk. "Hasn't anyone ever given him a gift before?" Oh, how can such a simple thought carry so much feeling? The perfect gift—ahhh, you can guess—but it's more enjoyable to read for yourself! [5]
