From the First Issue

From "Passing of the Torch, a Note from the New Editors:

As most of you know, Lynda Roper has done a wonderful job of keeping The Monthly going. It has always been on time, dependable, and current. We did not want to see 'The Monthly' just fade away and therefore will try to live up to the high standards that Lynda has set... We love fanzines and would like to promote fanzines to people who do not know what they are as well as provide a forum for other people who love them and wish to share their hobby with others.

  • Everything You Wanted to Know About Fandom: "Who is Mary Sue and Why Does Everyone Hate Her?": "The reason long-time fan fiction readers hate Mary Sue is because we have been inundated with her for over twenty years. We all have our own, and if we want to read about Mary Sues, it will be ones we've created ourselves. Keep Mary Sue among friends... Does this mean that there can be no female characters, or heaven forbid, strong, female characters? Absolutely not! All female characters are not Mary Sues. Some of Mary Sues attritbutes include beauty, wealth, talent, extreme intetlligence, and the ONLY point of her bging in the story is to get the guy. Mary Sue can either rescue the hero or be rescued by him, but in any case she overshadows everyone else in the cast... If your character has a purpose in the story that actually advances the plot, then there is a good chance your character is not a Mary Sue and does belong there... If you are going to create a character, make it one worthy of everyone's effort. And don't worry if a little part of you creeps into your main character; just make it that part that makes you what you are, not what you might like to be. We'll probably like YOU a whole lot more than we would Mary Sue." (4)
