The Loyal Collectivewas a term coined by Beauty and the Beast (TV) fan, Stephanie A. Wiltse.
It is a self-description of a group of BNFs who were influential both with fans and with TPTB in the Beauty and the Beast (TV) fandom.
The main members were Stephanie A. Wiltse (publisher of Pipeline), Kimberly Hartman and Mark Hartman (founded and ran Helper's Network US), and Nan Dibble. There were other members as well, presumably those who were influential enough and how were considered suitably "loyal." From an August 1989 blurb by Stephanie A. Wiltse:
The 'loyal' of 5 states were invited, thanks to the Helper's Network, to a day's taping of Joan Lundin's new syndicated series "Everyday." Premiering September 18th, this show looks like Quality TV's answer to Morton Downey, Jr... [1]
While this was likely not a term George R.R. Martin himself used, it was used in reference by Wiltse to a comment about Martin's actions in early 1990 when it was learned the show was canceled:
Feeling, for obvious reasons, pretty fatalistic [about the cancellation of Beauty and the Beast (TV)] — George attempted to contact as many of the 'Loyal' whose numbers he had at his New Mexico home — to let them know as gently as possible: "The unfortunate thing with the way it works in television is that you don't get a chance to do an ending. I think we all had shows that we would have liked to write, the last show. We won't get a chance to do those." [2]
Wiltse wrote in January 1990:
Needless to say, word spread like wild-fire through the evening and into the night. Again, as last May, the 'Loyal Collective,' for lack of anything else to call our group-mind, came up with a 'game-plan' of sorts and informed this editor over the phone of its intention... [3]
In February 1990, Wiltse wrote about Beauty and the Beast Videotape Pledge and how "the 'Loyal' added value and gravitas:
For fans it is a way of putting their money where their mouths are, without spending a dime until the goal is achieved. It is also a way of being counted. Even if Republic and Witt-Thomas don't take us up on the idea, they will still have in their hands a very publicity-worthy vote of confidence from the 'Loyal.'
