From the Author
I think one of my main themes is owning your own life. I believe that comes through most strongly in "The Life That Lies Before," but can be found in many of my stories to some extent. It's the cornerstone of my personal philosophy so it's probably not surprising that I keep coming back to it in one way or another. Lately, I've been getting into exploring the idea of home, whether it's a place or a person or a situation. [1]
Reactions and Reviews
A first person POV story of a nineteen year old Kirk on summer leave who is severely beaten and raped by a gang of men. His brother Sam comes to help him and is sympathetic and understanding. When Kirk wants to put off Star Fleet Academy, Sam talks him out of it.
Kirk is on the Enterprise and reflects how although everything was taken from him: "My innocence, my lover, my brother—suddenly all of it has been given back." This is the only mention of Spock because this is solely a story of Kirk dealing with the traumatic experience. However, because it was only Kirk—not even Spock helping him deal with his pain at all—it left me a little cold. [2]
Story that makes the best addition to "canon"--Jungle Kitty's "The Life That Lies Behind," [sic] for explaining what the *hell* makes Jim Kirk tick. I'd meant to write a similar story on Kirk-the-neurotic, but read this and thought she'd about summed it up. She's got his number, no question. [3]
