"The Last Vampire" is a Forever Knight story by Diane Echelbarger.

When Nick is accidentally caught on film by a news crew, the Enforcers are persuaded by LaCroix to try an experiment to see how human society will take the discovery that vampires—or, at least, one last vampire—exists among them. Nick discovers that the complications to his life are overwhelming.

Comments & Recommendations

"The Last Vampire" was one of several early Forever Knight stories recommended by Jacqueline Lichtenberg in "Looking for a few good bytes - Part II" in November 1995.[1] The brief review includes a response from the author to Lichtenberg's query about the warning at the top of the story that it is "depressing".

The story is also the Bright Knight Recommendation for March 2012.

I really enjoy how she focuses on the heavy, mundane consequences piling up. Other people have written versions of the vampires' secret getting out, but most of those tend to be either about the social/political aspects of integrating vampires into human society (or exterminating them); I think that only Diane ever felt the cumulative weight of lawsuits and taxes and misguided groupies, etc., as well as the new barriers that isolated Nick even more than he had been before.
