Reactions and Reviews
1994
I love this story about an alternate Kirk and Spock who are mercenaries. Elizabeth portrays both characters the way I like them. Kirk is proud and courageous. Spock is a man of imposing stature, yet at the same time he can be vulnerable. I'd also like to say that I haven't seen any military oriented K/S this good since "SECOND ACTION" by Addison Reed (Within the Mirror 1). [1]
Excellent writing-clean and powerful. Exactly right words.
Kirk is hanging out with his fellow hard-core military mercenaries, on hiatus between battles. An excellent premise, the wars being fought by professionals; less indiscriminate civilian carnage, etc., that way. A rather ambitious scenario, and written very vividly.
I admire someone who can write "battles" and such, ship-tactical stuff. (It certainly is not my forte; I barely even know what to call them.)
Kirk is different than the rest; he chooses his employers more carefully, always favors the underdogs, lost causes. He has a reputation unparalleled...except by Spock, whom he has never met.
Really excellent physical description of Spock and implications about his character. He is the most gifted of all the mercenaries galaxy-wide, commands an entire army.
A Tellerite aching to fight with Kirk, and Spock intervenes-what a guy! And so they meet....
Kirk is so intrigued by Spock, and a little miffed at himself for succumbing to Spock's commanding presence (and his "silken finesse"). No one has ever effected him this way.
There are war games. Spock offers to take Kirk on in "oneman" (with small, one-person ships). If Spock wins, his prize is Kirk in bed; if Kirk wins, he gets Spock's entire army-so sure Spock is of himself. Kirk says he doesn't do that with men (so his virginity is indeed a high stake).
I like the technology of the games, done on shipboard computer-no one really gets damaged or killed. Besides, all the ship-technology was written really well.
Very fascinating ultra-macho games of dominance and submission in how Kirk and Spock relate with each other at first. Spock wins the battle, by putting himself in the path of an oncoming asteroid and trusting that the honorable Kirk will save him. Kirk is rather terrified of someone with such maniacal aplomb. And very turned on.
I love (among so many other phrases and images):Kirk "used the heavens like a cold shower." He is so shaken at Spock's game, Spock's tricking him by such outrageous means, he stayed in space and zoomed (zoomed?-see what I mean?) around for a while. These are extravagantly macho men (in the most appealing sense of the word, free from any of our undesirable connotations) making small, tentative concessions to each other-quite compelling.
They agree to another "fight," a fair one this time. This is one of the most unusual scenes I have ever read; I will never forget it. Such fine, unusual imagery, it blew my mind really. They don't exactly "fight," it is more like a performance/chase/dance. Cavorting, maneuvering. All the "gestures" they make with their ships, very loaded with sexual innuendo, and they also get off on the beautiful harmony of flying together. Very, very sexy. Finally, Spock (in his ship) turns over on his back, in supplication, wings spread. (God!) Kirk's getting hard. He lies his ship atop Spock's, length for length.... A tube from the bottom of Kirk's ship enters an orifice on Spock's, spewing dilithium crystals....
So intense, just gorgeous. Up there in space with Kirk, Spock realized he did not want to "win." He wanted Kirk "as implacable as myself, my equal, the unvanquished warrior." Very fine subtle verbal foreplay. (My insides in exquisite turmoil.) So excellent, the dynamics between these two gorgeous characters. Amazing, that men like this are admitting such things to each other, back down on the planet, when they agree to go to Spock's hotel-place.
The sex is beautiful, beautiful, although the gentleness seemed surprising at first. But really, it is less "gentle" than it is that each of them is very much in awe of the other, in awe of being nakedly making love with someone they hold in such high intense regard and find so overpoweringly appealing. Then, perfection: nova-wild orgasms!
Thinking himself at first rejected because he wants more with Spock, for all time, and Spock is reluctant to pair with someone he might too easily find dead on backwater planet, Kirk ends up offering to go with Spock, be in his army. Spock: "you have indeed won the final game."
A really wonderful reading experience, to say the least.[2]
Dastardly dealings within the federation, webs within webs, and Kirk & Spock. Ms. Scott's wonderful writing is to rare to be missed. Give alternate universe a chance. [3]
1995
Again, if Alternate Universe stories are not generally your thing, this story, also—in fact, this zine— is for you. This particular story is so nicely done and done with such feeling, that it just swept me away. The extra-added bonus is that Kirk and Spock are right in character—a common complaint with A/U stories being that they are unrecognizable. The story opens with Kirk in a bar with a bunch of paramilitary pilots who all engage in war games with their own private ships—constantly challenging one another and vying for top gun.
Spock, all in black—cool, dark and mysterious—enters the bar and wagers with Kirk that he can beat him at a war game. The stakes being Kirk's highly desirable body in Spock's highly desirable bed. Oh boy.
Of course Kirk is furious that this Vulcan should think or want such a thing, but of course he is not one to turn down a challenge. Of course.
All the ships that these players use are a reflection of their sexual identity and indeed, the flying, fighting and competition is all blatantly sexual. Boy, is it ever!
Naturally, Spock's ship is gleaming ebony with silver, Spock keep baiting Kirk and Kirk keeps biting. Some wonderful dialogue here, dripping with sexual undertones (more like overtones) such as when Kirk says: " 'Don't count on it, Spock. I intend to survive and to ream your ass from here to the Tenesar nebula.' " And Spock answers: " 'The only questions are whose ass will be the subject and whether the activity will occur in the skies or in my bed,' "Double oh boy!
So much drop-dead sexy dialogue like when Spock says: " 'Despite my earlier comment, I would much prefer the pleasure of mastering you myself rather than having others do it for me. " Time for some serious thrashing on the carpet.
The author has done a great job creating the reality of the fighting and the ships and all the necessary technology. But with a wonderful difference. And boy—viva la difference! This is "sex in space", let me tell you! Foreplay amongst the stars. Penetration in the cosmos. You get the idea. What an ideal
Kirk and Spock engage in such a sensual, jaw-dropping sexual dance in space that even some bystanders lyes, there was some passing cruise ship or something) got an eyeful....
Of course. Kirk has an erection the whole time. And it was also very hot in the room where I was reading.
The rest of the story—that ended way too soon because I loved it so much (but also because it was such a great idea and could have supported more story) brings these two gorgeous, charismatic guys together. The sexual tension between them just sizzled—their dialogue filled with innuendoes. Then the innuendoes stop being innuendoes and when Spock beholds Kirk's nakedness, he exclaims; " "A warrior's organ. As I knew it would be." Oohhmygod!
There's lots of purple prose in their lovemaking scene, but hell if I cared. Check this out: 'This' Spock said, caressing the length of his own penis, 'will make you know that indeed you are a true warrior.' He climbed into the bed, sought the still swollen lips again to bedew them with a score of fervent kisses.
Oh and to add to the continuing list of lubricants and their containers—Spock coats his fingers from a small silver jar of cream. And Kirk even thrashes. But he thrashes on the bed. not on the carpet.
The image of the space war games was carried through so beautifully into their lovemaking, I just adored this story. [4]

This also I reviewed back in 1995, and I couldn’t resist sharing it with everyone. It’s considered a classic K/S story and one of my all-time favorites by one of the best K/S authors.
This is an “alternate-universe” story and is in Scattered Stars which is a zine for A/U stories only.

All the ships that these players use are a reflection of their sexual identity and it’s all a clever comparison to guys and their cars today.

Kirk and Spock engage in such a sensual, jaw- dropping dance in space that a voyeuristic passing cruise ship gets an eyeful. And when Spock sends a message to Kirk saying “Ready for entry,” I fell down.
Of course, Kirk has an erection the whole time and it was very hot in the room where I was reading.

There’s lots of purple prose in their lovemaking scene and I loved every bit of it and the image of the space war games was carried through beautifully.
I just adored this story. [5]

Alternate universe stories are not for everyone. For me the determining factor has always been how closely Kirk and Spock can be kept in character. If I can see beneath the surface to the characteristics that make our intrepid captain and first officer the men they are, I can enjoy seeing them in different circumstances facing various new challenges. SS 5 is filled with wonderful stories, poetry, and art that examine our favorites through another set of lenses.
'The Last Game' is a rather famous AU K/S story. Both Kirk and Spock are mercenaries, albeit principled ones. In this time and place, wars are fought by hiring bands of men to do the fighting for planetary governments, that sit back and watch.
As the story begins, the mercenaries are taking a few days off from warfare to play their own games. They complete in what is essentially a game of laser tag fought with spaceships. Naturally Kirk and Spock square off against each other as the best of the best. Spock has made Kirk a wager: if Spock can best him, Kirk will go to his bed. In return if Spock loses, he, his men, and ships will be put at Kirk‘s disposal. This creates some wonderful sexual tension between them. It‘s obvious that Spock is drawn to the handsome buccaneer, but Kirk is also drawn inexorably to Spock‘s dark magnetism...and he doesn‘t understand why.
This story is so well plotted and quickly paced that even with repeated rereading it holds the reader‘s attention. Very enjoyable! [6]

A nice story in an excellent zine. In this AU, Kirk, an elite mercenary, is challenged in a spacecraft fight by legendary mercenary commander Spock. The stakes? Spock's entire army....or Kirk's body for the night. Very nice tension, especially on Kirk's side who's both distrustful and strangely compelled by Spock, something he doesn't want to admit. Both charismatic and used to win, the two men are excellent matches for each other in wits and skills. Intriguing AU world. [7]
