The Friendly Five refers to the five semi-canonical characters of Chumvi, Kula, Malka, Tama, and Tojo from the universe of The Lion King.

One source explains the characters inclusions thusly:

  1. Are Simba/Nala’s age
  2. Did not appear in the movies
  3. Appeared in an illustration in a book or comic
  4. Were explicitly named in that book/comic[1]

This explains why characters like Mheetu or Mtoto aren't part of the group and the number stops at five: Mheetu was omitted from the original film, and Mtoto has no illustration accompanying his name.

there are other cubs around simba and nala’s age (when they were cubs, haven’t been seen since) in the pride; kula, a brown cub who likes to eat (relatable) ; chumvi, who thinks lions are The Shit ; tojo, who just looks like simba with blue eyes and a limp but unique in that he basically adopted 6 bird hatchlings as a cub; and tama, nala’s rebound bff when simba was being a shit one time. there’s also malka, the lost boy with a black mane tuft (and ear tufts!! he’s very cute) but a brown tail tip, but he’s actually part of a separate pride and was only in the pridelands for a little while.[2]
