Reactions and Reviews

This story which deais with the entangling of the mainline universe with an a/u in which Kirk and McCoy are lovers, is interesting conceptually. The author should be careful with scientific terminology, however. A "biochemical structure" is organic. A "wavelength" is energy. So it doesn't make sense to say that they are similar. A "bi-dimensional warp" isn't something you can see or touch. So it doesn't make sense to say that it has a "molecular structure". The passing reference to a mindless mirror Spock being used to rape minds also seems puzzling. Mind-rape requires concentration and focus. The reference was also puzzling in terms of narrative continuity. In the beginning of "The Fog" a/u McCoy acted as if he'd never heard the name Spock. but later we learn that he'd met a Mirror Spock. This is contradictory. And how did a/u McCoy telepathically pull a/u Kirk when neither of them are supposed to be telepaths? There is also a missing transition. A/u Kirk has just returned from the mainline universe, but somehow he'd found out the fate of a/u Amanda. He couldn't have discovered this information in mainline universe records. So a paragraph needed to be inserted separating Kirk's arrival from the rest of that scene showing passage of time. I am sure that Mergwin will learn more about such things as she gains experience in writing.[1]

"Another species' physics experiments result in another inter-universal transfer. This time, Kirk finds himself in the Republic, whose Kirk is married to a bearded McCoy and whose government is so fearful of Vulcans as to forbid them aboard starships and to forbid them to mind-meld on pain of death. The reactions of all parties are very well drawn, as they try to restore the captains before they both die of the effects. A particularly sweet touch is "our" McCoy's confession to Spock -- before joining him in meld to rescue their Kirk --that he, too, had had hopes of Jim's love. The captains are restored, leaving a lonely Bones in one universe and a lonely Spock in the other. The latter, however, finds his way into a universe where his counterpart is both beloved and dying, and takes his place.[2]
