The Flags, also known as the Youngbloods, are a group of prominent young members of the Port Mafia in Bungou Stray Dogs. They appear in the Stormbringer light novel and manga. The term is most frequently used to refer to five of the six, as Chuuya is a prominent character outside of the group.

Members

  • Albatross: lighthearted, rambunctious, in charge of vehicles for the Port Mafia.
  • Chuuya: in charge of the Mafia's gem trade at the time.
  • Doc: a legally trained back alley doctor who has saved around 800 people and killed as many; chronically ill.
  • Iceman: quiet, reserved, has no ability but is the Mafia's best assassin.
  • Lippmann: a movie star, the public face of the Mafia, canonically sometimes presents as a man and sometimes as a woman.
  • Piano Man: the leader of the group, an expert forger, next in line to become an executive, tells horrible jokes, kills with a piano wire decapitation device.

In Canon

The other Flags throw a birthday party for Chuuya and gift him a photo and information about his past. When he is abducted by Adam Frankenstein, the others decide to keep drinking and send out a rescue team if Chuuya isn't back within half an hour. By the time he comes back, the others have been killed by Verlaine.

In Fandom

Main pairings in the group are Pianomann (Piano Man/Lippmann) and Albadoc (Albatross/Doc). Chuuya is most often shipped with Dazai, who is not a Flag, but is sometimes shipped with Albatross. Iceman is shipped less frequently than the others but is sometimes shipped with Piano Man or Albatross. Since none of them have strict canon ages apart from Chuuya, though all of them are twenty five or younger, their ages in a given fic often revolve around which characters are being shipped together.

Fanwork Tropes

  • Angst: Since all the Flags but Chuuya die shortly after their introduction in canon, fics dealing with their deaths and Chuuya's mourning are common.
  • Everybody Lives: AUs in which the Flags survive and continue as members of the Port Mafia.
  • The trope of the Flags holding a holiday celebration or other gathering may owe its popularity to Chuuya's birthday party.
  • Piano Man being related to Atsushi, as Atsushi's long-lost older brother, uncle or cousin, comes from a headcanon inspired by both having silver hair with a black streak/streaks on one side.
  • The Flags watching one of Lippmann's movie premiers or otherwise getting involved with his non-Mafia job.
  • The Flags are often a band or sports team in AUs.
