The Compassion Trap by Gil Hale is a gen Sentinel/Magnificent Seven crossover novel set in the ATF shared universe, the widely popular Mag7 AU where the Magnificent Seven characters are members of an ATF team in modern-day Denver and very successful at fighting crime.

In this story Vin Tanner from Mag7 and Blair Sandburg from The Sentinel share a past that they never told anyone about and that secret comes back to haunt them. When they go missing, Chris Larabee (Mag7) and Jim Ellison (TS) have to team up if they want to find their friends before it is too late. Ezra Standish (Mag7) is featured in a strong supporting role. (Edgar Benedek of Shadow Chasers also appears as a minor character.) The story delivers a strong dose of angst, h/c, amnesia, drugs, friendship, smarm and works very well as emoporn.

The Compassion Trap was posted to the net in 2003 and later republished as a zine in May 2006. The zine has 262 pages and includes the sequel Demolition Men from 2004. The first story has a word count of 104,000 while the second one is only 52,000 words long. The zine is full-size with art by KAM and Annie.

Reactions and Reviews

Summary: Fifteen years earlier, Blair and Vin met by chance on the streets of Denver and became close friends. Although time and geography have kept them apart, Vin is the one Blair calls when he thinks he's seen someone who is supposed to be dead; someone who they met while on those Denver streets. Someone who they both have reason to fear.

When Blair and Vin fail to come home after a weekend out, Jim is concerned enough to call Vin's captain, Chris Larabee. Chris has his own concerns about the situation: Vin was supposed to be back in Denver on Monday and he's overdue. Chris flies to Cascade and teams up with Jim to try to figure out what's happened to their missing friends.

Reccer's Notes: Gil excels at writing crossovers; she gives equal weight to each fandom and its characters. Originally written for the SentinelAngst list, it definitely fits the angst bill. I don't know anything about M7, but still found it understandable and enjoyable. Gil wrote a sequel called Demolition Men . Enjoy. [1]
