The Cadence of Part-time Poets is an alternate universe, Harry Potter Marauders fanfiction by Motswolo. Set in a non-magic setting, the story is told from the point of view of Remus Lupin as he attends a prestigious boarding school and forms a rock band, The Marauders, with his roommates Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew. The story is a Remus/Sirius slow burn that also features James/Lily. A sequel to the story, detailing their time after school and in the band, is planned but has not yet been written. Motswolo has also posted several deleted scenes, alternate perspectives in a fanfic "Cadence: The B-Sides." These two published works along with the upcoming part 2 are grouped together in a series titled "The Cadence Opus."

“They’re… chaos,” Remus said firmly. “And chaos is—”

“Rock and roll.”

He looked at Sirius sharply, and for once, matched his grin. “Yeah.”

“Maybe that’s my excuse then,” Sirius said. “I cause a bit of chaos now, and maybe one day, it’ll turn into rock and roll.”

After losing his mother at age eleven, Remus has spent the better part of the last four years bouncing from school to school or else running around London and pretending as though he wasn't the kind of well-bred boy his father brought him up to be. Now, with his chances all run out, Remus is sent to Hawkings Independent School as a last-ditch effort to clean up his act. There he meets the very people who will set up the rest of his life, and is forced to confront the pieces of himself he'd long thought had been lost.

I think that Cadence is a coming of age and queer journey masterpiece. I might be biased though, cause it it my favourite fic so far. It's just that I love that the main theme is the journey of figuring out yourself through music, friendship and found family. I love how we see the characters growing up, making mistakes and developing in the young adults we get to see at he end. I think the narrative that threads between them are beatifully handled and the characterization carries you through the plot smoothly, like a dance--there was a lot of foreshadowing that you just don't really notice on the first read. The OCs are really well done, and all the characters are so rich and multidimensional and do their pairt into carrying the plot in such a balanced and natural way. Tonya just broke my heart and mended it in such an strange and lovely way. Tsk, sorry, I just love coming of age as a genre, queer themes, the 70's as an era, the 70's music and music in general a fucking lot, so this was just my cup of tea (a little too much, even) .

It’s my favorite fic and I didn’t mind the filler chapters because I wanted to be in that world as long as possible. I love the OC characters and I think Tomney deserves Grant Chapman level of recognition.

Cadence of part time poets is probably my favourite Wolfstar characterization I put off reading this fic for so long because it is very long, like 900k words so far. But damn it is so worth it! Sirius is perfect, he’s witty, strong and a bit callous but has this soft side and vulnerabilities beneath it all. Remus is similar to all the young dudes but I find him to be sweeter and a bit more emotionally intelligent if ya know what I mean. Their relationship is so so precious and the love they have for eachother is just so beautiful. Very slow burn but it’s nice to see it develop and very worth it when it comes.
