Even prior to its theatrical release on November 1, 2019, Terminator: Dark Fate was extremely polarizing to the fandom, often split along gender lines. Female fans tended to laud the primarily female cast and its unapologetic depiction of an aging Sarah Connor as an action hero, while male fans tended to critique the decision to replace John Connor with Dani Ramos as the main protagonist and leader of the future resistance.

I have never seen a woman at this age with this kind of vital power without heavy adherence to femininity. Helen Mirren in RED is amazing, but she played a beautiful woman who used traditional beauty standards. This? Is a woman who is sexy because she gives no fucks about her appearance and SHE’S ALLOWED TO BE OLDER, MASCULINE, AND FIERCE. She isn’t a heroine, she’s a HER who happens to be a woman. [1]

people are seriously discussing why Terminator: Dark Fate is been a “box office bomb” without addressing the fact that privileged white men have campaigning against the film since the first trailer because:
  • we have three women as leading characters;
  • one of them is a 60+ yo
  • one of them is latina
  • none of them is hyper-sexualized or have a romantic interest
  • they kick men’s butts all the way
  • the film talks about immigration even if briefly[4]
