Crunchy, crunchy numbers

For anyone grabbing past ship/character/fandom numbers from AO3, make sure to flip the sort order to "date posted" and check the posting dates on anything near your line (whatever that is). Tolkien works are often very long and posted over lengthy periods. Also make sure to be logged in to avoid missing locked works. -the old briar pipe (talk) 21:54, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Issues of listings by fanwork frequency

This note was on the page:

(Please add other ships you can find a substantial number of works for - maybe 50 or more? Add the ship to whichever year saw its initial surge of popularity, as far as you can tell.)

Right now, the list pile of red links. I would prefer to see this listing in a separate page or footnote. If pairings such as Glóin/His Wife become popular, we can make a fanlore page and then link. But in the meantime, it feels like TMI to me. --msilverstar (talk) 03:14, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

I'm working on the ship and character pages one by one. They take a while to do properly - I didn't want to just throw up a bunch of stubs. I'll be saving the first couple tonight, etc. Red links aren't the end of the world, I don't think, since they do encourage people to create pages. As for the numbers, it was easiest to do all of those at once, with the site open. It's similarly easy to pick up links to archives for various characters/ships as I go, so I'm doing those in batches as well. It's just faster, if only one person is pulling all this info, to do it efficiently.
These are all ships with at least 50 works on AO3 and more on other sites, so I don't personally feel like they're TMI. If you want to work on ships you personally like and think are relevant, please do! If you want a separate page for shipping, I think that could be arranged pretty easily. But I do think the numbers make a really useful point about how the fandom has shifted over time in reaction to new canon. That's something I think people looking into the fandom for the first time would be interested in knowing - that how it looks now is different from how it looked in earlier years, and why. -the old briar pipe (talk) 03:25, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Update - I just saved the Kili/Tauriel page and am currently working on 4 others. To avoid accidental overlap, if anyone else is working on ship pages, I've got open: Fili/Sigrid, Dwalin/Nori, Bilbo/Fili/Kili, and Dis/Her Husband. -the old briar pipe (talk) 03:42, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
