Talk:Tamsyn Muir
Kiwi writer?
serkestic what would be a Kiwi writer? Where did you get this information? I would like to know why this can help other readers and editors read and understand the page, now and in the future -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 23:18, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
- "Kiwi writer" possibly refers to someone who lives in New Zealand. --MPH (talk) 23:55, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
I had never heard of this term, but I will search on it. Thank you MPH -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 00:03, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
not sure why this needs a citation, but here's the wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_(people) -- Serkestic (talk) 06:26, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
i am brazilian and had never heard the term. Unlike it seems that you are possibly Americans, British or some other nationality that speaks English. It may be more common in your language to use the term Kiwi to designate people from New Zealand, but around here I can hardly find anyone who remembers that the country is in Oceania. Serkestic I'm not asking about the term because I'm a boring person, but because I never hear it. There is no need to be defensive or edit the text of my question. His response sounded aggressive to me, as if everyone had to understand a term just because it was in English or popular with speakers of the language. What seems obvious to you and needs no explanation may not be obvious to someone else. It's for reasons like this that I've been thinking about giving up editing -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 14:37, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
- um, my apologies for how i worded my response, i didn't mean to sound rude. i genuinely don't know why it would need a citation, regardless of being a not easily recognizable term of reference. it's like asking to cite the word "desi" - south-asians use it commonly, but it can also be new to some people who have not interacted with south-asians, etc. my personal understanding of citations is that we cite information/knowledge that are specific claims or need to be traced back to a legitimate source, not information that needs "explanation". for example, the statement "Tamsyn Muir has not written much Kiwi science-fiction"; this would need to be cited (and can be, to an article where she says as much). that's how *i* understand citations, my apologies for not being clear on that.
- however, i found your response incredibly insulting. not sure why you would bring up nationality unless you're specifically trying to cast me as a person of privilege in this exchange; i'm from the third world and english is not my first language. i didn't call you a boring person, and i didn't edit your text. and then finally saying that it's "reasons like this that you want to quit editing", i'm sorry, but you are a stranger on the internet, why are you trying to villainize me for a twelve-worded sentence over the word "kiwi"? i have no personal beef with you? i don't KNOW you??
- you were completely polite and within your rights up until your recent response, and i certainly didn't deserve to be personally targeted by you for not having the correct tone in my response. this is the INTERNET. please remember we are strangers, we are writing in text, and therefore the least we can do is afford each other the benefit of the doubt in our exchanges. i'm sorry for my part in not wording my response more carefully; but you were also a complete jerk in your last response -- Serkestic (talk) 14:05, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Ellakbhesse - please could I remind you to assume good faith about the other editors who use this wiki, and not to make assumptions about another editor's nationality or native language.
- We have a wide variety of editors from different backgrounds and with different native languages here on Fanlore, and many of us use language in subtly different ways. But that doesn't mean that someone who uses a term that another doesn't immediately recognise is actively trying to exclude anyone with their wording.
- It's fine to query terms like this on the Talk page if you're unsure, but please remain as open-minded as possible and refrain from jumping to conclusions about another editor's intentions or their background over the use of a word.
- Best,

Oh I misspelled your username and you edited it in my answer. I didn't like it and I apologize if I was insulting. And yes we are strangers on the internet, I didn't say I was and called me boring, I said "I didn't mean to be boring by asking about the term", in the sense that I wasn't wanting to bother but understanding better. I was not in my best mood at the time I sent you such replies, I was as defensive as you seem to have been. The Portuguese translation of your answer seemed aggressive, and sometimes I hate how this writing and translation tool instead of helping me seems to get in the way of my communication with people. As I said, at least I had never heard the term. Yes we are strangers on the internet, I'm not trying to make you a villain, I just said that situations are difficult to understand/understand between the parts, mainly because I don't speak English, not a word and I depend on electronic devices to speak and edit here. And situations like this that have occurred and others are tiring. I'm not throwing my possible departure from Fanlore behind your back. And again I didn't mean to offend you when I mentioned the different types of English, I didn't want to talk about nationality, but that's how it came out and I should have noticed this mistake. I did a bad prejudgment and exceeded myself too much. And if something in this text doesn't look right let me know, because my keyboard/translator isn't working properly and a lot of what I type is spelled wrong -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 16:22, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry for any inconvenience, I will act more sparingly going forward. I joined Fanlore to be part of this site in a relaxed way, to help and be helped. I didn't want to offend or judge anyone -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 16:26, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- it's okay, thank you for apologizing. we all have bad days. let's just consider this issue closed now.
- thank you for mediating also, rebecca! @ enchantedsleeper -- Serkestic (talk) 18:27, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
