This passage is copied from the FH wiki discussion page:

I removed this passage about fanzine covers from the "positive attention" of the Fan History wiki entry:
One Fanlore editor who is working on a massive zine project has borrowed fanzine covers from many places, including Fan History. This borrowing has been done, in some cases, without the permission of the fan artist when the artist gave permission solely to Fan History wiki.[1]

As it turns out, it's not about positive attention or attention the FH wiki receives at all, it's about a complaint about adding fanzine covers to Fanlore where it is said that the artist only gave permission to the FH wiki and having the covers here means the artwork is stolen. I'm going to copy this to the page of the artist/publisher and add an attention gardeners tag there because if we don't have permission to use the images, they should be removed.--Doro 15:37, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

If the images are taken from the FH wiki, someone should check out what policies they have on images and licensing. Their page about Images says: Just like in the original Wikipedia, images used at FanHistory.com must be free for "commercial use and alteration." and links this Wikipedia page. On the wikipedia page it says: Creative Commons licensed images with Attribution and Attribution-ShareAlike as their license may be used on Wikipedia. Images with any license restricting commercial use or the creation of derivative works may not be used on Wikipedia. What does that mean for images that are used on the FH wiki and taken from there? In the meantime I suggest we remove the images in question and don't add further images from the FH wiki. --Doro 15:37, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Doro, our position as a non-profit, educational and informational site, is that we use zine covers and other artwork under the doctrine of fair use. Fair use is why, among other things, that we use small, fairly low-res images. Images used under fair use are not "stolen." Fair use does not require the permission of either the artist or any site where that artist's work may be archived. We will, of course, look at any complaints from artists on a case by case basis, but with respect to the small, low-res zine covers commonly used here, we are confident that they fall within the fair use doctrine with respect to Fanlore. -Melina 17:10, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Melina, Thank you for the quick response and for the clarification! If I understand you correctly, we should check that cover images taken from somewhere else are relatively small and low resolution images before we add them. That makes sense. The images here were, as you said, fairly low-res and as such not identical to the images of these zines at the FH wiki, because those have a much higher resolution. The images have now been removed here anyway, but this is very helpful for future situations. Again, thank you. Should I remove the attention gardeners notice?--Doro 17:35, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Yup, go ahead, and I'm glad the answer was helpful! -Melina 18:02, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
