Talk:Sherlock Sketchbook Project

From Fanlore
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Hello! I'm Cân Cennau, and this is the talk page for the slightly desperate attempt to preserve the remaining pages of the Sherlock Sketchbook Project. Unfortunately the project tumblr was lost during 2018, and while some of it was recoverable from the Wayback Archive, much of it wasn't. I'm looking for anyone who has copies of their own pages, or copies of someone elses, or someone who's happy to trundle on through the archives of the many Sherlock blogs to locate them.

What we've got, and what we need

(If you're coming over from DW, this may have updated)

The full list of pages I already have is here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1K7KkqeXMwG_Tsw3rUFG-DQDrVhyMuVXq?usp=sharing

On the main Fanlore page for the project, I've also listed the pages I've managed to recover - but there are still pages I don't have, and possibly artists I haven't found yet. There were initially 99 artists chosen for the books, but the books only made it to a select number (I currently believe that the artists listed in the tables are the only ones who managed to complete pages). Below I've listed artists with no pages that I'd very much like to have pages from:

  • itsarobot
  • clorocarbon (chlorocarbon)
  • stale-brain-cake
  • mycroftismight (ultraniceness)
  • worriesconstantly
  • timetravellingfruitcake (btchplz-ink)
  • askthecitywatch

And below here I have a list of artists with some pages or drafts that I'd like more from:

  • post-hummus - currently only have part 3, looking for 1 and 2
  • Spacedrunk (retrobeefcake)- have pages 2 and 3, looking for 1 and 4
  • floralprintandflamethrowers - have parts 1 and 3, looking for 2
  • photinus - currently have parts 2 and 3 for photinus, looking for part 1.
  • firelordpie (skyootumcrux) - currently have part 2 and an incomplete draft for an unlabelled page. Looking for parts 1 and 3.
  • ko-no-yo - currently in possession of parts 2 and 3, and the part 2 draft - looking for part 1.
  • Dekuku - currently have part 2, looking for 1 and 3
  • Sianco (that's me!) - currently have parts 1 and 2 and the text for 3, looking for the art for 3.

(These artist names may have changed over the years, and I may have picked up art in their new name which was posted under their old one - if you see accidental name duplicates, let me know!)

Most of the above have been found and contacted on tumblr. Here are the few I can't find any trace of on tumblr:

  • stale-brain-cake
  • askthecitywatch
  • Dekuku
  • floralprintandflamethrowers

If you find any pagers or artists, please let me know either here or on DW (cancennau)!

Current recovery rate: 82/124 (66.1%)

Hi, welcome to Fanlore!! I've been watching this page come together with interest. I haven't actually found anything for you but timetravellingfruitcake is now at http://btchplz-ink.tumblr.com/ as far as I can tell, although they don't seem to have anything in their Sherlock tag from this project. When in doubt, consider just sending asks to these folks, if you can find them. It'd also be interesting to ask them to talk about their experiences with the project!
(PS, don't forget to sign your talk page comments with four ~ ! More about talk pages here if you need it.) - Hoopla (talk) 07:32, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
Ooooh, thank you! I'll have a look after work. And thank you for the reminder :D Cancennau (talk) 07:37, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
Okay, I think I found two of 'em:
  • stale-brain-cake: stalebraincake.blogspot.com maybe? They definitely draw art and it looks like they're a very recent blog, so they probably deleted their tumblr and moved recently or something
  • dekuku: dekuku.tumblr.com says they moved to eakira -> eakira to kozcme -> kozcme says the moved to @uzqmaki, a link this time! -> clicking @uzqmaki redirects to uvhiha
I didn't try contacting them though because I figured you'd be best at that! The page is looking great, by the way! - Hoopla (talk) 20:34, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I've dropped an ask to uvhiha. Looks like stalebraincake has a deviantart too, so I'll pop a comment there tomorrow. Cancennau (talk) 21:24, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Looks like another tumblr user had the name uzqmaki after Dekuku - unfortunately uvhiha isn't Dekuku, but is very nice anyway. :3 Cancennau (talk) 20:09, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much for preserving this and creating the page.MeeDee (talk) 18:36, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
A few more pages here: https://archive.is/sherlocksketchbookproject.tumblr.com and of course there are 97 pages on the WBM (the first capture is here: https://web.archive.org/web/20120302215605/http://sherlocksketchbookproject.tumblr.com/ and https://web.archive.org/web/20130312012455/http://sherlocksketchbookproject.tumblr.com/page/2 MeeDee (talk) 18:45, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Thank you so much MeeDee! i'll have a look and see if there's anything I can nick from the links. I'm not certain if amaliak's one is for this sketchbook project or for a sketchbook project - will have to do some digging. But thank you! <3 Cancennau (talk) 19:49, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Image galleries

I put the names of the artist of each piece on it and changed the galleries to "mode: packed-hover" so that the images could be displayed larger. Personally I think they could stand to be displayed even larger than they are now, but the best size for them will probably depend on how the rest of the page develops. More gallery options can be seen here — maybe "packed" or "packed overlay" would be better? I'm not sure! (Note that regrettably the slideshow won't work until fanlore is updated.) - Hoopla (talk) 20:17, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

aaaahhhh it looks so pretty! Thank you so much! :D I like both packed-hover and packed-overlay versions - I might try both of them out tomorrow and see which one might look better. We could go a little bigger on the images - I've tested the page out on mobile, and the images are kind of tiny. :') Maybe 200px or 250px?
(also thank you so much for sorting out my text bits at the bottom - I was fiddling with them for ages this morning trying to figure out how to make them tidy! :D ) Cancennau (talk) 21:26, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
200px or 250px would probably be good for being able to look at the pictures and see what they are without clicking through, but it might make the gallery sections too big for how the page is set up now because there's like. Text information above the gallery, then the gallery, then a small amount of text information below, then the next section header. I think if the images are going to be bigger, then all of the non-fanwork info (about artists who did or didn't draw for the sketchbook, etc) should be above the gallery.
(Caes actually sorted out the text bits before I could using the Quotation template! You can see who did what edit by going to the history tab on the page.) - Hoopla (talk) 21:41, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Ooh, my apologies - thank you Caes! And agreed about the artist info text - if we move the artist info above the gallery, and then make the images a little bigger, that should work. That being said, I'm slightly concerned that moving the artist text would make it a little more confusing to distinguish between which artist got to draw for the books and which artists never received the books - do you have any ideas on how to make that more distinguishable if we move it? Cancennau (talk) 21:58, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Sure, I've got some formatting ideas! Uh, I'm going to return to no intent for this because otherwise it looks really weird.

The simplest way would probably be by putting the list of artists who've completed pages in an unordered list (or an ordered list, if you know for sure who got the sketchbook in what order?) For example:

Artists known to have completed pages:

  • Kihanna
  • post-hummus
  • floralprintandflamethrowers
  • looshu
  • firelordpie
  • photinus
  • axolotltoast (now transjiimhawkins)
  • itsarobot
  • TacoFace
Other artists: hoursago, capaow, artigraphy, spacespander, other-side-of-the-multiverse, rucet, samworkds, feyuca, bopx, etherelle, trilltrillian, chloeelise, headlessgirlsart, unicornempire, rcanthony

However, maybe a table instead? You can sort them!

Artist name Pages completed Pages found
Kihanna (all) 3 3
post-hummus (some) 1 1
floralprintandflamethrowers (some) ? 2
looshu (all) 3 3
firelordpie (some) ? 1
photinus (some) ? 2
axolotltoast (now transjiimhawkins) (all) 3 3
itsarobot (none) ? 0
TacoFace (all) 3 3

Tables are really annoying to make by hand so I always use this tool first to make them. At least one table to list all participants who are known to have created something might be good, although the full table with everyone might belong on a subpage? Also, more table info here and on sorting here in case you want that. - Hoopla (talk) 22:23, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Decided to go with the tables, and have edited accordingly. The tables are currently listed in shipping order - I found a copy of the participant list here, and while it doesn't show who did draw for the project like the original, I know the participants are ordered in the order they received/would've received the sketchbooks. The image widths have also been expanded to 200px - but it doesn't seem to have made a difference, and I have a feeling Fanlore isn't reading up the width change. fanlore why.
I've also opted to change the captions to reflect the name the participants signed up with, with three exeptions:
  • ko-no-yo is listed as ko-no-yo because although they signed up as kogitsunenoyosora, they posted under the name ko-no-yo
  • Spacedrunk/retrobeefcake, same reason as above
  • Cân Cennau, because that's me and someone's got to be #extra
I've still listed their alternate names in the table. Cancennau (talk) 06:43, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
