Determining shipping trends using Ao3 tags
- I just added a paragraph saying the Finnpoe was the second most popular pairing in Sequel Trilogy in 2017, but I now realise that this might not be true. Reylo fics can be tagged Rey/Kylo Ren or Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren. When I sum the total in each category, it looks like there's more Reylo works than Stormpilot since very early in 2017. But a lot of fics use both. At the moment, there are 8853 Works in Kylo Ren/Rey, of which 5192 are also Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren. This would mean that while it looks like theres 14000 Reylo works on Ao3, theres probably less. Hoping someone who's more familiar with the tagging system might be able to set me straight, or give advice on how to figure out which ship had more fics in 2017. Otherwise, I'll delete the sentence that can't be confirmed.--Auntags (talk) 21:38, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- You could try going in the Rey/Kylo tag and use the filters to exclude works tagged Rey/Ben. But it looks like Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren is the parent tag of the ship, so it should include all the Reylo works? caes (talk) 21:49, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren is the parent tag for this ship - it includes all works tagged only as Kylo Ren/Rey or Rey/Ben Solo as well (just like [1] includes works tagged only as Armitage Hux/Kylo Ren or Armitage Hux/Ben Solo. The only Reylo-related tags not included in the parent tag are Rey/Matt the Radar Technician (a ship known as Reydar) and Kylo Ren/Rey/Ben Solo (a poly ship known as Breylo). However, there's only a few works tagged only in such way (6 for Reydar and 2 for Breylo), so it doesn't change much). --Ewa-jednak-chce-spac (talk) 15:31, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks guys. Was Rey/Ben Solo|Kylo Ren always the parent tag? I'm looking at the archive page for the sequel triology, dated 1/01/2018. It's says that there were these many works in each pairing: Armitage Hux/Kylo Ren (7241), Poe Dameron/Finn (4269), Armitage Hux/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren (4255), Kylo Ren/Rey (3878), Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren (2257). So at that date there was more works in the Kylo Ren/Rey tag than in the parent tag. The archive link is referenced on the main page. --Auntags (talk) 19:40, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
- You're welcome. The sidebar lists how many works were tagged with the specific tags, it doesn't merge these tags into parent tags. At this moment the sidebar on the archive page for all SW types shows there are 8861 works tagged as Kylo Ren/Rey and 6753 as Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren, but when you go to the Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren tag page, it shows there's 10584 works in it.
- BTW, I didn't write about it previously, but the actual number of Reylo works may be higher (although not drastically higher), because some Reylo works are tagged only with the platonic tag for these two (Rey & Ben Solo | Kylo Ren). --Ewa-jednak-chce-spac (talk) 21:55, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
- Miracle of miracles the Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren tag page, is archived. Here's the stats by date.
- 29 December 2017: 4379 Works in Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron/Finn (4244)
- 22 December 2017: 4025 Works in Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron/Finn (4166)
- Going back through the archived pages, Poe Finn was second most popular right up to the release of TLJ. I personally wouldn't include gen fics of either pairing in these stats, as almost all of those fics are platonic. Thanks again for your help. It's good to know a bit more about how the tagging system works. --Auntags (talk) 22:07, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
