I'm thinking the strings of abbreviations in definition pages can be off-putting. Nobody wants to have to click on six links to understand a sentence. I'm adding bits to this listing, but it's definitely something to watch out for: could someone who didn't know the fandom/trope/meme/whatever understand what's being said without clicking on a bunch of links? --Elfwreck 03:42, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

What does "Extreme purists could argue that OTC refers to all of Fandom as a whole." even mean? Every person in fandom has one character they're obsessed over? That's kind of ridiculous, so even as a stated "extreme" viewpoint, can you include some info on how this argument is made? Or else toss it out altogether. --Kyuuketsukirui 07:42, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

I understood that to mean that those are "fans of fandom", rather than fans of the media sources or characters, but I agree that the sentence is odd. --Ratcreature 08:17, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, okay, that would make sense. If that's the meaning, then yeah, should be reworded for clarity. --Kyuuketsukirui 08:42, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
One of the early definitions of OTP referred to OTP as a singular event, not a plural one, not an OTP per fandom or it wasn't really an OTP. I'm assuming this was in a time where people didn't have three or four concurrent fandoms. So the line referred to is a reference to that argument, not necessarily an actual critical examination of the OTC's place in the history of fandom since it has a severely limited history. AKA, a reminder that OTC isn't in itself a unique term but one that's developed as a corollary and possibly even as a joke to the original term OTP. --Seperis 13:39, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Gotcha. That's much clearer now. --Kyuuketsukirui 13:49, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

rename to One True Character

Looks like OTC should be the redirect and One True Character the name of the page, unless there's another expansion of OTC??--æthel 18:23, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Moved, like, two years later... ;-) --Mrs. Potato Head 13:54, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
I completely forgot about this. Thanks!--æþel 22:19, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

The Self-Identification Section

Thank you, Doro, for making combining those things and making it read a lot better. --Mrs. Potato Head 13:54, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Out of curiosity...

Are there any "[female character]babes"? The examples make it look as if this mostly happens in buddyslash fandoms (Fangirl A prefers Blair over Jim, Spock over Kirk, etc.) This isn't a criticism of the page! I'm genuinely curious. --Anenko 08:32, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Well, in Forever Knight fandom, there are definitely people who are Ravenettes rather than NatPackers, and vice versa. --Greer Watson 09:09, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Scope

One thing that puzzles me a little about this page is that much of it doesn't seem to be about the term "One True Character" or OTC, but rather about the concept of favourite characters in general. We don't seem to have any examples of the term OTC/One True Character in use, only the fandom-specific variants (e.g. Spockies, Scullyists). But are these the same? Could those terms be given their own pages (as I think many of them are in big enough fandoms that there'd be enough material for a full page) and this page reserved for the term it's about?

I'm also wondering whether the term itself sees enough usage that there will be examples to add to the page, but I guess there's only one way to find that out. --enchantedsleeper (talk) 12:12, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
