Talk:Alicent Hightower
Aegon Discussion
I have removed the following quote chain because I believe it requires additional context. Decades of scientific research has shown that corporal punishment of children "increases the risk of broad and enduring negative developmental outcomes." Of course, in episode 8 when Alicent slaps Aegon, he is in his mid-to-late teens. (Plus it was prompted by him committing rape – i.e., he wasn't just a mouthy or misbehaving teen.) But there is a nuanced discussion to be had on how perceptions of "good" vs. "bad" parenting vary widely with time and culture. And how such perceptions have been used to enforce systems of racial and class oppression. I believe it's possible to acknowledge that people aren't uniquely unfit parents if they are following dominant cultural practices and values without appearing to endorse the position that it's never problematic for parents to hit their kids. Because the framing here seems highly reductive. Night Rain (talk) 21:10, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

- This should be added back onto the page. The commenters are not endorsing a position that its never problematic for parents to hit their childern. They are highlighting how people from different cultural backgrounds interpret the character differently, and they are suggesting that it is primarily white western fans who view the character as problematic for striking her son. I believe that is a relevant and important perspective to keep on the page. --Auntags (talk) 22:26, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- Look, conclusively stating that white people are the only ones objecting to the slap scene (as 2/4 of the commentators do) is, at best, an oversimplification of complex underlying phenomena, and at worst provocative in a way that tends to generate more heat than light. These views may certainly be presented in the article per PPOV. But I firmly believe there should be more context and a wider range of views integrated to faciliate their inclusion. I'm in this fandom and can source quotes. Night Rain (talk) 23:29, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- I've added a wider range of perspectives and re-integrated the original quotes. Night Rain (talk) 04:53, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
