Talk:A Taxonomy of Fans
Oh my goodness, such a stubby stub. And no template. And it probably has a sub-standard title. And has no context. And may belong on another established page. And, oh, so lacking in almost every way, but there is a germ of an idea here, and I wanted a start on it. --Mrs. Potato Head 01:48, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- This quotation is fascinating; but it seems to be a taxonomy of stages of entering fandom. Surely there's another taxonomy that applies to existing fans? I mean, we all are armchair fans in a much wider range of fandoms than we're active in: shows we watch regularly, wouldn't miss an episode, have them all on tape...yet we never take that next step. Then there are lurkers: check to see if there's anything on ff.net, or google for an archive; but never actually write in the fandom. Or the next step, joining a mailing list or comm, but never joining in discussions. Then there are the contributors—to discussion, as well as writing fic (if only a drabble in response to a challenge). Then there are those who organize conventions, moderate lists/comms, write over a hundred stories (and all of them good), etc. It's parallel to the taxonomy you quote; but it's not quite the same, since it applies to people who already know what fandom is and how it operates. --Greer Watson 06:38, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- All excellent points which I hope get put in whatever article arises from this subject. I simply found this single quote and wanted to get a page of some sort started. One thing to keep in mind is the quote's context: 1976/pre-internet/and from a fandom in which certain people felt they had to educate Star Trek fans in how to BE a fan, as many new fans hadn't come up through the SF circuit. . --Mrs. Potato Head 13:23, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, the period is very clear: from the modern perspective, it's fascinating to see the focus so purely on Star Trek. --Greer Watson 15:17, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
rename?
The current page name looks like the title of a meta, but the content reads like an activity. Rename to something like Classifying Fans or Fan Taxonomies?--aethel (talk) 16:46, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
- I like Fan Taxonomies. --MPH (talk) 17:23, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
