Andor, also written as Star Wars: Andor, is a prequel to Rogue One, revolving around Cassian Andor and his introduction to the Rebels.
Canon
Cassian Andor starts on the planet Ferrix, first meeting with Luthen Rael and kicking starting the events that lead him to joining the Rebellion. Episodes focus on different aspects of the Rebels, using Cassian's as a touchstone or the heart of it all. Other storylines are Mon Mothma's involvement, specifically with funding the Rebellion and how that leads her further into danger, and how this effects her relationship with her family; the plight of Empire prisoners; and the small rebellion Ferrix that builds up for the whole season, kicked off by Maarva Andor's death.
There are some retcons of Cassian's original backstory presented in the Rogue One movie and companion works, like his place of birth and original story of joining with the Rebellion.
Characters
- Cassian Andor, chronicling his life from childhood to right before joining the Rebels.
- Bix Caleen, a risk taking scrapyard owner on Ferrix.
- Syril Karn, a disgraced private contractor looking for a second chance.
- Mon Mothma, hiding her contributions to the rebellion while navigating her senate position and family life.
- Luthen Rael, leader of the rebellion spies.
- Dedra Meero, an Imperial lieutenant working for the ISB.
- Vel Sartha, leader of Luthen's Aldhani team.
- Cinta Kaz, member of Luthen's Aldhani team.
- Karis Nemik, member of the Aldhani team and writer of the rebellion manifesto.
- Kleya Marki, Luthen's right hand.
Fandom
What-ifs and prequels for Rogue One revolving around Cassian's life had been posted long before the show came to be. The first fics on AO3 under Andor were also posted before the show aired.
As of 6/23/23, there are 816 works under the Andor tag.
Retcons
The show does retcon parts of Cassian's original backstory presented in the Rogue One movie and companion works, like his place of birth and original story of joining with the Rebellion. These changes have have inspired meta and conversations between fans on what this means for Cassian's character, what a retcon in general really means, what makes it good or bad, and what it means to love a property that changes canon story so frequently.
My singular issue with Andor was the retcon-ing of previously established canon. Reason being, continuity is really important to maintaining suspension of disbelief. The story is cheapened without it as it feels like the creators are just making it up as they go along (for financial reasons) rather than telling the story 'as it happened'.https://www.tumblr.com/anonymoose314/708419753897869313/timelines-part-1?source=share
I've been struggling a bit with Andor and how it portrays Cassian as reluctant to fight. It feels like it undermines the lines in Rogue One where he says 'I've been in this fight since I was six years old', and 'we don't all have the luxury of chosing when we care about something'. Except Andor is much more nuanced than I imagined. The Fight wasn't against the Empire. It was against oppression. Cassian's fight started the moment the Republic colonialists set a foot on his planet.
tony gilroy retconning cassian’s homeworld from fest to kenari so that we can have the “canary in a coal mine” wordplay is great actually
this might be a bit of a hot take™️, but whatever: cassian’s backstory + character development in andor isn’t a retcon just because it doesn’t fit with the image of him you’ve created in your head.

“Alright,” Cinta fixes Nemik and Cassian with a no bullshit look, “if you two try to sleep alone tonight, you’re going to freeze. Literally. And since I don’t fancy chipping you out of ice blocks in the morning — sleep together.”
Vel snorts into her tea.
Cinta shoots her a chiding glance. “You know what I mean. Body heat, boys. Doctor’s orders.”

It takes a heat wave for Jyn to notice that Cassian never, ever goes barefoot.
- What's Left for Us to Say by elwenyere. Cassian/Melshi
“I need to tell you something,” he said, turning his head over his shoulder to where Melshi was curled up against the bulkhead next to him. “Keef Girgo. It’s not my real name.”
“I figured,” Melshi replied, and he allowed himself a hint of a smirk when Keef’s eyebrows shot up in surprise.

With just a few days to go before the mission, Vel is starting to have some doubts. Luckily Cinta is there to ease her mind and remind her of why they fight.
