- there is much in Vincent's character that drives from the literature and culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance
- Vincent as a symbol of Jesus Christ
- Vincent and Catherine has been compared to the tradition of courtly love
From the Essay
Mention has been made of Vincent as a symbol of Christ in the way he acts and in his influence on the actions of others. In this context, I find it particularly interesting that in medieval bestiaries — a name applied to a class of allegorical works written to symbolize spiritual truths, using animals to satirize human beings and to draw morals about their behavior — the lion was one of the animals used to represent Christ.
Vincent is a melange of Christian Bestiary, Courtly Lover, and Renaissance Courtier - certainly someone to be reckoned with in the twentieth or any other century!
