So Close To You is a Kirk/Spock story by Elise Madrid.

It was published in the print zine First Time #53.

Summary

Kirk discovers that Henoch and Sargon had a relationship when Spockʼs body is taken over by Henoch.

Reactions and Reviews

As always, a story that fills in the blanks of an episode or gives me an additional act intrigues me. There was so much hinted at and yet left unfulfilled in TOS. Here we learn the impact the encounter with Sargon and Henoch has had on both members of the Enterprise command team.

We are allowed now to see and feel Kirk’s anguish after he’s witnessed the destruction of the sphere holding Spock’s consciousness and knows he must now destroy the body that once held the essence of his friend. Having imagined and hoped for the day he’d be able to hold that body in his arms, he must now, without ever having experienced that joy, phaser it out of existence. That’s powerful stuff that was completely glossed over in the script. But we feel it’s full intensity here and it made me hold my breath.

I’ve always savored the line from “Return to Tomorrow” when Sargon advises Kirk “I could not destroy one so close to you”. It’s one of those unshakable certainties we fans of K/S can hold onto. Someone who has been a virtual part of Kirk, who has inhabited his body, announces with absolute conviction that he’s seen what Kirk and Spock mean to each other. Ms. Madrid allows us to finally realize the full potential of that truth.

The events that unfold are a natural catalyst for Kirk to reveal his love and that’s exactly what he does when the crisis is past. It begins with words, progresses to a hopeful kiss and then takes on a life of its own in this writer’s skillful hands.

Nice to see the real end of the episode![1]
