Silvergifting is a commonly-used ship name for the Celebrimbor/Sauron (as Annatar) pairing in Silmarillion, LOTR, and Shadow of Mordor fandoms. It is also sometimes referred to as silverfisting leading to numerous jokes of a sexual nature between the fans. Some discussion as to the relevance of possible differenciation between the pairing names used has also happened, with some considering Silverfisting to be the name of the dynamic when it strays into dark territory or marking the differenciation between Sauron/Celebrimbor and Annatar/Celebrimbor, and other people using both names indistinctively or preferring Silvergifting for the pairing without care of the dynamics. It seems however, that Silverfisting was used first as a literal translation of Celebrimbor name, and Silvergifting is the correction, including both his and Annatar-Mairon name meaning and thus being a more correct ship name. [1][2]

Silvergifting, due to his nature of being an enemy-victim pairing has always somewhat been the subject of scorn by outsiders to it, recently whether because purity culture (although given the prevalence of incest and Angbang-shipping in fandom there are few of those in the Silmarillion spaces) or historically because it's baffling due to its imagined toxicity to other Tolkien fans. Seen clearly as to this[3] user commenting on Silvergifting as their NOTP for Celebrimbor as an example of the latter trend. However, as by Ao3 metrics is also one of the top 10 ships of the silm fandom, indicating its popularity, it's rare to find someone harassing the shippers. In general the Silmarillion fandom skews towards older fans well acquited with the Ship And Let Ship golden rule.

  2. ^ EluredTheIrrelevant - I remember the change in names reflecting the changing ship dynamics i.e. the ship used to be almost entirely one-sided with Annatar manipulating Celebrimbor. When the popular dynamic changed to have Annatar love Celebrimbor back, the ship name changed to include elements of Annatar's name as well as Celebrimbor's. 3. ^ https://at.tumblr.com/mainecoon76/character-asks-celebrimbor/638ak02gtm4z Sorry, dear Silvergifters. Truly, I’ve given this ship a chance, exposed myself to it and readseveral well-written fics, but it still makes me viscerally sick. I just can’tsee Sauron being in any way invested in this relationship – or not beyond gratification through power – and that gives the whole thing adynamic I find extremely upsetting. Not to mention that Celebrimbor’s fate isterrible enough without adding toxic and utterly hopeless romance into the mix.So no. Get thee gone from my gate, thou servant of Morgoth. I don’t usually talk about this on my blog out of consideration for the shippers, and withtumblr being tumblr, I’ll add that I don’t mind people shipping it (although thepopularity of it makes it difficult to avoid). I don’t think it’s “problematic”.I mean, I even read the occasional incestuous Celegorm/Curufin trainwreck, soit’s definitely not a moral issue. It’s just that I can’t deal with it.
