Sigma is a popular, though relatively minor, character in Bungou Stray Dogs. His ability causes him to exchange darkest secrets with those he touches.
In Canon
Three years before his first appearance, Sigma was written into the world using a page from the Book. He found himself, fully grown but with no memories, in the middle of the desert, holding a ticket from a nonexistent train station. He became a human trafficking victim and eventually was found by a member of the Decay of Angels, who recruited him in exchange for a place to belong. The Sky Casino was written into existence for him to manage, a duty he takes very seriously, staying up nights and memorizing the personal information of thousands of patrons so as to best serve them. Following a fight, he fell from the sky but was saved by Nikolai Gogol, who took Sigma with him to break Fyodor Dostoevsky out of his cell in Mersault prison. During the escape game, Dazai Osamu chooses Sigma as his tool. Sigma is left in an information overload coma after touching Fyodor and being given his hundreds of years of memories.
In Fandom
Sigma, who has a very androgynous or feminine appearance and outfit in canon, is frequently headcanoned as nonbinary or a trans woman.
Sigma is frequently seen as a sweet and innocent character, despite some of his darker actions, and treated as a blorbo.
A number of daily blogs are dedicated to him. The subreddit dedicated to him is called r/SigmasCult. It is not very active.
Sigma canonically likes cookies and is often depicted with chocolate chip cookies in fan art.[1] That "sigma" is a term in Internet brain rot slang leads to a number of puns and meme art[2] of Sigma the character. Also joked about is Sigma calling himself an ordinary man despite being a flamboyantly dressed three-year-old terrorist casino manager.[3]
Shipping Sigma is slightly controversial, since he is said to have only existed in the canon universe for three years, though he came into being fully grown and with full intelligence. He is shipped with a very large assortment of characters, with more common ships including Siglai (with Nikolai), Fyosig (with Fyodor), Fyosiglai/The Decay Trio (with Nikolai and Fyodor as a throuple), Sigzai (with Dazai), Sigchuu (with Chuuya), Sigkoku (with Dazai and Chuuya as a throuple), and Atsigma/Sigmatsu (with Atsushi). Sigma is also sometimes headcanoned as aroace.
Common tropes in fics include Sigma joining the Armed Detective Agency and Sigma third wheeling or fifth wheeling with friends, to his misery.[4]
Because most major BSD characters are based on authors, there is a lot of fan speculation about who Sigma could have been based on, with popular theories including Sergey Nikolaevich Syromyatnikov (a Polish author who used the pseudonym Sigma), Sigmund Freud, Albert Camus, Ian Fleming, or no real life inspiration.
