From the Author's Preface

As you have no doubt noticed (that is, any of you who have followed my work), this zine, which I have called "Shadows Trek", is quite different from my usual fare. Let me offer a (hopefully) brief explanation.

I have enjoyed the original Dark Shadows show since the late '60s and early 70s when I was in high school. Only recently, however, was I able to even begin to catch up on what I'd missed of the original episodes (from '66 to '69)—and in this way, obtain enough knowledge to write fanfic for the show.

First up is a DS/TOS crossover called "Dark Frontier", with the Dark Shadows characters of Barnabas and Quentin Collins interacting with the TOS crew (it's set after ST-TMP). They are dispatched to Colltnsport to investigate several mysterious deaths and disappearances. They meet Barnabas early on and he becomes quite taken with Dr. Christine Chapel. They subsequently become lovers and for a long time, she is unaware of what he really is.

To complicate matters, Spock develops deep feelings for Christine himself and warns her against Barnabas since he has suspected from the beginning (as have Kirk and McCoy) that Barnabas is not all he seems — and not in a positive way. But being under our favorite vampire's spell (via his compelling eyes), she disregards the warning. The investigation kicks into high gear when one of their own, a young female Security officer, is attacked. The latter soon dies, but Barnabas tells them how to deal with her before she rises as one of his kind. Spock is the one chosen to dispatch her when the time comes. (This comes after a nightmare the Vulcan has about himself and Christine becoming two of the undead.)

They then learn Barnabas' full story and agree to help him become Human again. McCoy develops a serum from Julia Hoffman's original formula, adding a necessary ingredient she was unable to find — and Barnabas is cured. They agree to keep in touch...after Christine makes her choice between him and Spock.

The other story is an Alternate 1840 Real Time story, called "Bittersweet Secret", depicting what might have happened if things had worked out for Barnabas and Roxanne. Six weeks after they share a passionate night together, she suspects she is pregnant (by this time Julia has cured him of his vampirism). Julia confirms it and to escape Angelique's wrath — as well as keep her from discovering the pregnancy — the other two women (J&R) decide it's best for Roxanne to move to New York, where her brother, lawyer Randall, resides; he cares for her.

Barnabas and Roxanne keep in touch, but he is unaware of her pregnancy until they meet again unexpectedly during a business trip he takes to New York a month or so before the baby is born. He learns everything and the forcibly separated lovers soon renew their romance. Upon his leaving, they continue their correspondence, carefully concealing their relationship over the next several months until and after the child, a daughter who is named Rose, is born.

They eventually learn of Angelique's knowledge of the child and Roxanne — but she is uncharacteristically understanding, even tender and caring regarding the child after it is decided to allow supervised visits between little Rose and Angelique. Unfortunately they soon learn that Angelique has something even more insidious up her sleeve than kidnapping little Rose. Barnabas once again becomes an unwilling participant after succumbing to a special spell which enables her to become pregnant. Because of a special proviso in the instructions, however, Angelique has to live as a mortal woman for the duration of her pregnancy, with all the risks that involves ...and in the end, dies from the complications resulting from her child's birth — a son, who is named for her mortal father.

After a decent interval, Barnabas marries Roxanne and they go back to 1971 with Julia and Randall via Quentin's Staircase of Time...and for her unselfishness at the last, Angelique wins entrance into Heaven.
