Shadow Jedi is a 165-page gen Star Wars anthology of fiction, poetry, filks and artwork. No "slash or gratuitous violence" was accepted.

The art is by Z.P. Florian.

The zine debuted at MediaWest*Con.

A second issue was proposed for March 1995, but it was not published.

The Editorial

This one wasn't my idea. Not really. Well, maybe it was, after all...

Marti and Veronica told me about The Invitation and Thresholds at MW*C last year, and sent them to me for Alliance and Empire 2. Then Veronica sent me Initiation Rites, and I started thinking. That's always a bad sign. Really ~ just ask my husband.

Why not do an all-Vader zine? I certainly had enough submissions for it, and I was sure I could entice ZP — prolific, talented ZP — to do an illo or two, and maybe a story.

But before I went ahead, I threw out the idea to the gang on the GEnie computer network. Response was overwhelmingly positive, so I wrote to Marti and Veronica, asking them if they'd mind if I used their submissions in the new zine, rather than in A&E. They were happy with the switch, and ZP not only produced some gorgeous illos but a story as well ~ and the cover - oh, the cover....

This is only the first issue ~ Issue 2 already has a long piece from Veronica lined up, but you don't want it to be lonely, now, do you? Send me more stuff! Issue 2 has a tentative publication date of May 1995, in time for MediaWest. Stories located at any point in the Saga are welcome, as are pieces from alternate timeframes and universes. Just stick to the Lucasfilm guidelines ~ no slash, no blatant sexual situations. See you next time! [1]

Authors' Introduction

It was the small hours of the night. Outside the Kansas motel, the little college town slumbered peacefully. Inside the darkened room lay two dedicated STAR WARS fans and writers. Hours of discussion, hoarse voices and common sense had not yet stilled their restless souls, nor lulled their desire to cram every available second full of their passion for the saga during this brief weekend visit.

In sleepy tones, the two conversed, hitting on the topic of stores not personally tackled, it occurred to one that she had never ventured into the genre of alternative fan fiction, mainly because she disliked the way not only events were altered, but the personalities of the very characters she loved as well. The other agreed it was a shame that, though a few might exist, they'd never read a fan story embracing only alternate happenings. The conversation continued. How could such a story work? Which characters to involve seemed obvious, given the two writers' personal preferences, but where to break away from the saga into the realms of 'what if? Could the characters' personalities remain basically unchanged in an alternate setting?

Bye the time the first faint lightening of the sky was beginning, as early risers were greeting the birthing of another day, the fantasy idea had become the skeleton and muscles of a story. All that remained was to flesh it out. One writer suggested they work on the project together. The other, realizing they'd already co-authored one story and ever-eager to try new avenues, suggested that each take that skeletal, muscled, and faceless image and flesh it with their own individual styles.

The following two stories, "The Invitation" and "Thresholds", are the results of that late night/early morning friend fanfest. We hope you will enjoy them. All similarities between the two are fully intended.
